‘Google killer’ Wolfram Alpha gets public demo (important internet breakthrough)
Telegraph UK ^ | 5/1/2009 | Claudine Beaumont

The website, Wolfram Alpha, launches later this month, and aims to provide a different approach to internet search queries by not only understanding people’s questions but answering them directly. It means web users can ask questions online in much the same way as they ask them in real life, a process known as “natural search”.

Some internet experts have dubbed Wolfram Alpha as “as important as Google”. The search engine is the brainchild of Stephen Wolfram, an eminent British physicist.

“Our goal is to make expert knowledge accessible to anyone, anywhere, anytime,” said Dr Wolfram, as he demonstrated the search engine at Harvard University. “Like interacting with an expert, it will understand what you’re talking about, do the computation, and then present you with the results.”

I remember that website “Cuil” I think it was about a year ago.

It was strange and unfamiliar to me.

I'll check it out, but I've been relatively happy with google.

We changed every computer search to IXquick. Google tracks you, IXquick does not.

You know Google is working with the current administation. I’m not ready to search for “Hot Air” or “Townhall” on Google anymore.

Considering what some of these so-called “experts” say/believe nowadays, maybe we’d be better off not knowing.

Doesn’t really sound like it’s terribly useful for what Google actually does. Google is still, in spite of all the decorations, a way to find a website, maybe it’s a website with an answer to some question, but probably you’re just looking for a website. I haven’t wanted to put a question in the Google box ever.

Wow...but...

There's no Wolfram Earth, no Wolfram Sketchup, no Wolfram Maps, no Wmail, no Wolfram Picassa, no...

OTOH, probably a good app for scientific inquiry.

I have seasons 2, 3, and 8 on DVD from Ebay before they canned the sales of MST3K on the site.

Joel’s presentation was much better than Mike’s. As for the ‘stoned’ implication, it was part of the act. He was so fatigued from overwork during the first taped episodes, he just kept it as part of the act.

Shades of “IT”. No one wanted a goofy riding toy, and no one is going to want this product — as I understand it from this post — either.

What a godawful name!

It's a typical egghead marketing mistake. Sounded good to him, and made sense in an egghead sort of way, so it ought to be a great name for a new world-wide search engine, right?
