Universal Healthcare - is there anything we can do? (Vanity)

Posted on 04/30/2009 7:07:18 AM PDT by wingsof liberty

Anyone else out there scared? Democratic leaders are threatening to impose the use of reconciliation - a simple majority vote - to defeat a GOP filibuster on The Ones Universal Healthcare package. No negotiation, of course. They will say its my way or the highway. The GOP is threatening "all out war" if the Rats try to pull this, but honestly I dont think the Dims are too scared. We know what a single payer healthcare system like Obama is proposing would mean. All we have to do is look to Canada & Britain: -A flood of millions of new patients, including illegal aliens, creating a chronic caregiver shortage -Long waits to see specialists, resulting in deaths -Specialists quitting their professions because they will be paid the same as regular physicians, -Patients denied treatments their doctors recommend because government beaurocrats say no, and the list goes on. So is there anything we can do to stop this disaster from happening? I have written my lawmakers on this, but considering I live in MA have already been labeled a "threat to national security" by DHS for doing so. How can we willfully impose a system that we know will be disaster based on other existing examples? Oh, were being turned into a Socialist state that also doesnt work - never mind. The GOP needs to be out in force educating the public on what this would mean for every American - so far I dont see it happening. Chairman Steele? Mr. Chairman......?

The courts are one avenue to fight this. Another is competition, which IMO would best be provided at this juncture by setting up medical care facilities on Indian reservations, exempt from federal and state laws, including all the trumped-up malpractice garbage. Not only would this be great for patients and medical professionals, but it would be great for the Indian tribes, who have so far been building their economies largely around gambling and tobacco sales.

Once profitable businesses delivering high quality medical care have been set up on Indian reservations, people who live too far away for that to be convenient would start clamoring for the same type of businesses in their own areas, and apply political pressure. Trouble is, our entire medical care system has been largely socialized and outrageously overregulated for so long, that few Americans can even imagine what truly FREE healthcare would look like.

Heh...that’s the angle I’m leaning towards.
Still sucks, tho.
Kinda like the whole class being punished because that idiot in the back row cheated on the test.

I have not seen one but you create one and I promise to buy a few. We can create our non-governmental stimulus package and keep the money among Freepers !

I can’t decide whether I think the “fly by” was stupidity or an act of “see what I can do to you” - I’m leaning more to the latter at this point.

As far as the “new flu” goes - it’s one of two things: Either it’s media hype scaring everyone, or it’s a lot worse than their telling us.

And, no, I don’t trust them.

“Is there a t-shirt for that?”

I’ve got one that sez: I’m the radical extremist your government warned you about.

Under rationed healthcare, we will not live as long as our parents. Doesn’t that make anyone angry? We have lived at the apex of civilization and are now sliding downward toward the abyss. We won’t get there tomorrow, but that is where we are headed.

Well, I do think eeducation is key—buying commercial spots—I actually heard one the other nite. Most telling thing is that the communist, socialist, and marxist countries are moving/have moved AWAY from government control and more towards capitalist, market economies. This is key, why would we want to go where it was tried and FAILED. If people can be education to see that, there is hope.

Why would someone want to emulate or invest in a failed business venture? Oh I don’t know let’s say the re-opening of a defunct or diminishing fast food chain like Hotdog Henry’s. If someone came to me wanting me to get involved with it I would say, why? I would rather invest in a successful chain...same with economics, just needs to be brought down to understandable examples that can be sound-bite sized, with catchy slogans...sort of like Reagan’s are you better off now than 4 years ago phrase. To the point and catchy.

Ideas welcome btw!!!

Government will step in and make this illegal - just like you cannot buy cigarettes on an Indian reservation. The one and only way to stop this insanity is to limit the amount of money we, the people, let government spend. They will no longer have an bottomless pit of money to spend: http://pushbackuntil.com.

My dad and sister were simultaneously diagnosed with cancer this Feb. The have started treatments - sister right away (worse), Dad just yesterday (plus he had old clot problems pop up which messed up plans). I’ve been scared what will happen to them, but at least they start on the good side. Likewise me and my mom, as we both suffer from constant GI problems from top to bottom, and makes it very hard to be “happy” much less really help out. We have enough trouble without having to get by without any meds or doctors for long times.

I pray for your family’s health—may you all feel better soon!!

May I ask where do you live? Perhaps you can you contact your reps? senators? I am in IL and our senators are totally worthless—tho I still continue to call them.

Sounds like you have a story to tell! I believe that personalizing stories in letters to politicians and letters to the editor of local newspapers (for the few who still read them) is more effective than quick calls saying we are against a piece of legislation.

“...same with economics, just needs to be brought down to understandable examples that can be sound-bite sized, with catchy slogans...”

Somewhere on the old Woodstock soundtrack album, is Wavy Gravy (a lesser hippie icon-and his real name alludes me at this point.)saying, “...Capitalism isn’t all that weird!”
Heh! Beat them old Marxist/commune hippies with their own words, I say!
I use that quote as one of my Tea signs.

*shrugs* life goes on. The best thing we can do is to move our capital to tax havens like Dubai and get medical care there if we need it.

Have you actually moved your money (what is left of it from the 2008 financial fiasco) to Dubai?

Wow. I was just saying the same thing to my mom on the way to work this morning. She's devastated about what's going on, not because of how it affects her, but how it will affect her grandchildren.
I'm ready for the call to arms. I don't think we all ought to just sit around doing nothing and whining. I know for saying that I'll probably get a sharp knock on my door in the middle of the night soon; but, hell, I'm fed up. These bast**ds are systematically destroying our country.

No I’m screwed. But on the other hand, due to the glut in housing supply, we could all move to Dubai for cheap.

We can create our own “underground network” of health CARE in communities with bartering and cash and trade - like the old days. Then hope and pray we don’t need the expensive stuff.

I don’t know what the health CARE answer is - but I do know what the gov’t is pushing is not health CARE, it is health INSURANCE and there is a very big difference. The poor are already covered by Medicaid and Medicare (those who actually jump through the hoops to get it). And, just because you have the INSURANCE does not necessarily mean you get good health CARE.

And that’s something else to consider: how many times (think Katrina) when the gov’t gave away services, the recipients whined about it not being good enough or enough period. The people who think that free health INSURANCE is going to solve their problems are going to be very dissappointed when they figure out that it isn’t going to cover every little thing and that they will have a new set of responsibilities along with it.

I fear that’s when the proverbial sh*t will hit the fan.

The indian reservation idea is brilliant.
But I can’t help but chuckle at the irony.

Here us evil white european types tried like crazy to destroy them in the past and yet, here we would be looking to them now to save our way of life.
It’s just nutty enough to work!

A LOT of people I know are very unhappy about the prospects for socialized care. It is NOT going to be a slam dunk for the administration. Entire industries will fight this.

Glenn Beck had a lady on last night talking about this. She’s a naturalized citizen from Canada and talked about how people from other countries come here for the best medical care (i.e. Berlusconi, etc.) and that, if we go to universal care, there will be no place left to get good medical help. We are the last place on earth.
Yes she was the inspiration for this post, actually. Unfortunately it seems like the only thing that will weaken support for The Ones radical agenda is another terror attack - oops sorry, “non-overseas contingency operation.” With him bringing us back to a 9/10 mindset, I fear the question is not if we will get hit, but when, where and how hard.

Here’s what I’m doing.

I’m a physician (interventional pain) and I’m alerting my patients of pending legislation. Specifically, I have been alerting my patients of an AP article indicating that doctors may be punished for ordering too many advanced inmaging tests (MRI scans?).

I also believe that even if we have Orwellian style coverage restrictions, a free market will emerge whereby patients can receive the care that they want. Let’s hope that the free market will not be a black market.

It’s possible as the heathcare rationing comes to light there will be a rush of Medicare and Medicaid patients to schedule their procedures before strict rationing come to pass. Hmm sound a little like stocking up on ammo.
