I’m sure they infected their share. Toddlers are notorious for putting things in their mouths.

Not to mention Brownsville is very close to South Padre Island and Corpus Christi, which are spring break locations. Corpus has 20 cases right now. I don’t know about Port Isabel/South Padre yet.

THe dots on the swine flu (parden my language, lol) google map is growing, check it out when you have a moment.

Agreed. But it's not the national “crisis” the media and Obambi are making it out to be.

We're in agreement on that — they will exploit it if they can.

However ... If your child attended the school of the 23-month-old that died from this flu — it WOULD most certainly be a crisis!

Fox News reporting that this child was ‘visiting’ from MEXICO!! This is not the ‘first’ US death! It is the first death of a Mexican here illegally(probably here to escape the governemnt run healthcare in Mexico)

Wonder how many folks in America did she infect?

Who let them in our country?

This is insanity!

Most likely the child’s parents drove from somewhere in central Mexico and crossed the border at Matamoros/Brownsville and then claimed they were from Brownsville. Either way, I’m betting illegal. Who knows how many people they infected along the way. Don’t you just love how Americans are warned not to go south but the border is wide open for any headed north.

Did this 23 month old attend school? Where are you getting those details or are you just projecting?

I work in a location right now that we have lots of school kids coming through on their end of school year field trips. Two counties worth of elementary schools. One school already closed due to confirmed swine flu. Plus one boss took vacation in Mexico this week!

Do I need to say I am totally freaked out. Probably not, ‘cause I've been venting on various flu threads. Check my profile and you'll see one from early this morning. Lack of concern by our government is what I will hold at fault.

This flu has been active in Mexico since Feb. and known since March. As cases and deaths continued to mount the border should have been closed 8 weeks ago. All travel to Mexico banned. Sure that would've thrown a little detour into the Americas conference, but we didn't need to be there anyway. And thousands of other Americans didn't need to vacation in Mexico. Enough notice and other plans could have been made, often with travel companies cooperation.

I am mad at the total disregard the 0bama Administration directed to this outbreak. I am mad that they let Americans travel on their spring breaks to a known infected area. Where the hell were the travel warnings? There is no plausible reason that 19 positions in HHS are vacant. The Administration can't fill them? This is an emergency...recall the old ones fools. Suck it up and work as a nation and not a partisan hack, the country is depending on the government and they are going to fail us! We don't have time for an orientation tour of the HHS department. Nobody from that department should have been let go until there were hip pocket replacements. Negligence & mismanagement.

My dad’s twin brother was one of the infant victims of the flu pandemic in 1919. It’s hard to know why one baby was taken and the other was not. You are correct that we forget how many people died from something that is now so treatable.

That’s what makes the return of the tuberculosis scourge, and the tragedy of all those malarial deaths so awful: they were eminently preventable.

I’ve already panicked. Water, food, fuel, etc. all in place for hunkering down for months. It is time.

You're obviously ready so my response isn't aimed at YOU, but rather the folks who've never really encountered a potential survival situation and may be feeling overwhelmed but unsure of what to do and that starts with being prepared.... for anything.

It's always a good idea to be prepared, ask any boy scout or person who lives in hurricane country as I do in South Florida. June starts the storm season. My generator is tuned and I have stored fuel all set to go. Food, water and such will wait for another month or so so as to be kept fresh for the season. I have enough on hand in case of an emergency of another origin like a flu epidemic or terror attack.

Being prepped is always a good idea. Panic is never a good idea. Even being "alarmed" is right at the edge of "panic." Figure out what threat you face then get prepped to deal with that threat. More than being physically ready it's important to be mentally and emotionally ready to survive. All the physical preps in the world won't help you survive a bad attitude. A bad attitude, especially an attitude of defeatism is like getting ready for suicide.

Being prepped physically, emotionally and mentally is 99% of the task. Still it helps a great deal to have the training to use the implements of survival. If you don't know how to change the oil in your generator, you're going to be stuck at some point. If you have a gun and ammo to fend off the looters and don't know how to employ that weapon in a tactical manner, you're in trouble if that contingency rears it's head. If you don't know how to cook over a sterno can, learn. If you don't know how to drive your vehicle with debris in the road, or you own a 4x4 without knowing how to drive it off road, learn. It's not anything like driving on the pavement! OJT could get you killed.

Does anyone know if there’s been any word about the 2 deaths in CA yesterday? Has the flu been blamed as a cause of death?

CNBC says this kid was a Mexican who came here for treatment. If true this is a totally different story and raises serious border questions.

If that’s the case it shouldn’t be reported as a US death.

Maybe a day care center. Even worse.

I think the point is that if you or a relative are in close contact with someone who will eventually die from this flu, it becomes a very personal crisis to you.

Wait, we don’t know if they were here illegally yet. People from Mexico can come into the US legally, too.
