WASHINGTON (AP) - Veteran Republican Sen. Arlen Specter disclosed plans Tuesday to switch parties, a move intended to boost his chances of winning re-election next year that will also push Democrats closer to a 60-vote filibuster-resistant majority.
"I now find my political philosophy more in line with Democrats than Republicans," Specter said in a statement posted on a Web site devoted to Pennsylvania politics and confirmed by his office. Several Senate officials said a formal announcement could come later in the day or Wednesday.

Never trust a RINO.
Time for a recall vote.
Now...THAT's a good one!!!
this is news, that walking corpse switch a long time ago, he just didnt get kicked out yet, the GOP leadership is worthless, spineless, wont deal with the traitors.
Does he have to give back all his Republican money?
Lots more like him. It’s time to take out *all* of the trash
Specter was also the member of the Warren Commission who came up with the magic bullet theory to explain all the wounds on JFK and Connally.
Arlen Specter Comes Out of the Closet
The GOP should see if they can flip one back, like Ben Nelson.
This confirms that Arlen has been suffering from Swine flu for years.
He can take Snowe and Collins with him too.
great idea. Then they’d have to appoint a repub...not that
the repubs are doing too good lately....what is wrong with
pennsylvania, or is it the folks in Philly and Pittsburg
outvote the others in the state???
They could be remembered as the well situated state that made
steel who lost out to steel makers half a world away.
How much overhead do you need to do that. Thanks alot.
This also means that Specter takes up a Republican seat on each committee he’s on until a reorganization. The Democrats will probably take the position that the reorganization can wait until Senator Franken arrives.
No, but I'm not sure what your point is. During the last election republicans were out of favor. Now democrats are likely to be out of favor. Unless you're making the point that Pennsyvania always votes democrat so republicans should run a democrat. But that premise is bad, because it wasn't that long ago they elected Santorum. And even if it was true, it should be the Republican's role to educate and convince to conservative values, not run a democrat just to say we won an election and then have our candidate vote against us.
The guy is a POS opportunist. He became a RINO because he could not run and win as a dummocrat originally so it is just a return to his home where he belongs. This is one time I am sad to say kemo worked.
Vince
They intended to use reconciliation to get around the filibuster in any case, and the gutless Republicans could do nothing to stop them.
Remember when the GOP threatened to use the Nuclear option, but were restrained because they didn't want to set a dangerous precedent? I noted then that the Democrats would not hesitate to use any power they had available.
We have now officially abandoned the Constitution, and there is dancing in the streets.
I’ve got news for Specter. He’s always been a Democrat.
He’s the last to know...
Best news I heard in quite a while, hopefully the rest of the RINO's will quickly join him. The only hope for the republican party is to return to conservative principals and have a consistent message, something they will never be able to do until they purge the liberal garbage from the party.
