FAA says low-flying plane over Staten Island is 'pre-planned' flight to take photos by Staten Island Advance Monday April 27, 2009, 10:03 AM
A plane, that appears to be a commercial jet tailed by fighter jets, is a "pre-planned" military flight taking photos of the Statue of Liberty, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.
Reports indicate it may be Air Force One.
"It is pre-planned, pre-coordinated with everyone involved," said FAA spokesman Jim Peters. "It's a military flight over New York to take photos."
Peters, who stressed it is not an emergency, said the flight is circling the Statue of Liberty and New York City to take photos.
Peters said city officials as well as state government agencies in New York and New Jersey were briefed on the flight in advance.
Hopefully that is the case but nowadays you just never know.

Seriously, I wouldn’t put anything past the maniac in chief.
However, I must reject the "official" word that this event was a "photo op." My common sense has been too reliable a guide over the years for me ignore it now. There was no reason to keep this thing secret and unannounced -- on the contrary, notifying the NYC public that it was scheduled could easily have been a wonderful PR thing for Obama. From the camera standpoint, I've only see one F-16 in the photos and videos, and it is always flying either closely beside or directly behind, AF1; the other F-16 isn't evident, and you'd think it would be if the idea was to get pics of AF1 with Lady Liberty and the NYC skyline. Neither one of the F-16s, from film I've seen, were in locations that made sense for photography. But I admit that I don't know or haven't seen where the other one was during the event.
No, the most dubious factor is the secrecy thing. Supposedly NYC officials were notified well in advance and told to keep it under their hats, and in that time, not a peep leaked out, not even a rumor, of it happening. WHY? For a dramatic, clearly potentially traumantic event, timed at the height of workday scheduling on a Monday morning??? Puh-leeeze.
Why the secrecy, when making it public to an Obama-adoring NYC populace, the reassuring prospect of this time our SAFE and FRIENDLY President's plane in the city, for a very reasonable, legit, and non-partisan purpose (not even Republicans could object, and I certainly wouldn't) purpose of getting nice updated stock photos of the plane with the city in the background.
This wasn't a photo op, and it defies common sense to think it was. It was either a) a secret operation with "photo op" as the cover story to be announced after the fact because announcing it ahead of time would have sabotaged the operation, OR b) a rogue event by who knows who, for who knows what purpose -- but something no one knew about in advance, not Obama, not the DOD, nor NYC officials. In a desperate and hasty cover-our-ass response, the "photo op" cover was used and NYC officials were either forced or convinced to claim that they were notified in advance.
If this was a legit "photo op" simply bungled by a narcissitic administration or negligent DOD, then Michelle Obama really has blue eyes and freckles underneath that dark tan and brown contact lenses.
Interesting.
Not that it would really matter, I suppose.
So....the event was planned, apparently the NYPD didn’t tell anyone about it. I’m not so sure they were forbidden to....
News reports say that NYPD says they were forbidden, as Port Authorities are also reported to have said they were forbidden, from letting people know ahead of time and apparently, even DURING the event, but were instructed to direct inquiries to the FAA, if I remember correctly what the news reports said.
I don't buy a word of it -- it stinks like yesterday's diapers. Something else was going on, and publicity photos of AF1 is a ruse.

Air Force One Flight Causes New York City Confusion

WASHINGTON, April 28, 2009 – The White House expressed regret yesterday over a photo opportunity involving Air Force One that stirred up confusion and fear in New York City.
The Presidential Airlift Group flew the VC-25 presidential aircraft, escorted by an F-16 fighter jet, over the city between 10 and 10:30 yesterday morning, said Gary T. Strasburg, chief of the Air Force’s Environmental Public Affairs.
The mission was conducted “in conjunction with normally scheduled continuation training for assigned aircrew members,” and coordinated with the Federal Aviation Administration, Strasburg said.
This mission was coordinated for the Upper New York Bay, south of the Holland Tunnel and in the Newark Bay north of the Staten Island Expressway, he said.
But New Yorkers who observed the flight found it all too reminiscent of the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks that took down both World Trade Center towers.
Louis Caldera, director of the White House Military Office, expressed regret yesterday over approving the mission.
“I take responsibility for that decision,” he said in a written statement.
“While federal authorities took the proper steps to notify state and local authorities in New York and New Jersey, it’s clear that the mission created confusion and disruption,” he said. “I apologize and take responsibility for any distress that flight caused.”

"...has been accomplished"???? What does that mean? Obviously, it HADN'T been accomplished. Frankly, I don't find the article pretty informative -- it's actually pretty confusing. Why would such a memo be sent to mid-level operatives instead of guys at the top? And when was it sent? The article doesn't say.
Why is the FAA releasing "cryptic" email memos about what HAS been accomplished instead of what needs to be done, written by a high-ranking FAA official and sent to mid-level guys in city bureaucracies, about a DOD event involving the airplane that belongs to the president of the United States?
This has the pungent smell of more bullsh*t. What is the FAA doing sending memos to city bureacreacies on behalf of DOD and military? Is THAT the FAA's job, to instruct local public officials about protocol regarding military use of U.S. Presidential airplanes?
Chuck Schumer doesn't exactly ADD to the malarkey's credibility, either.

If you’re looking for the truth, or a straight answer out of this administration....forget it. I have a number of questions as to why this was done.
The article shows that government agencies were indeed aware of this stunt.
It seems like we need hip boots whenever we read any so called official story about the act of Air Terrorism yesterday.
There is only way to getting the truth:
1. Who actually ordered this flight?
2. What was the objective of the flight?
3. Who was on the flight and in what official capacity?
Of course that will be as easy as getting a real egal/valid copy of 0b0z0’s certificate of live birth.
Sooo, where were the photogs? Not on the plane, shots of
the statue of liberty from the air are a dime a dozen.
Obviously if they wanted lady liberty and the president’s
plane in the shot they would have to be on the ground or
in the escort.
Something fishy about this whole thing.
