Everyone interviewed by The Post-Star for this story agreed ammunition of all calibers has gotten tougher to find, as gun owners stock up. Prices skyrocketed in recent years as metal prices went up, which caused many gun owners to stock up in anticipation of rising ammunition prices.
There are also concerns that some larger calibers, or those used by military-type weapons, could be banned, restricted or taxed more heavily.
One northern Warren County resident found out recently the government is paying attention to such ammunition sales.
West said a customer of his recently stocked up on .223-caliber rounds, a caliber often used in assault-style weapons. The customer bought 1,000 rounds a few months ago through a mail order company.
Shortly after the purchase, he received a visit from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, whose interest was apparently piqued by a large-scale purchase of that caliber.
"His wife was home. He was at church," West said.

B.S. story fast becoming an urban myth.
The reporter admitted to me by email that it was the shop keeper who claimed that a customer claimed that the DHS visited. And he made no effort to follow up on it, contact the customer, or contact DHS.
Small-town amateur.
Even switchblades are going up in price and getting harder to find.
Yeah. You can tell these reporters that have never even seen 1,000 rounds before. They think it's this huge room full of ammo. So in their mind, it makes good press.
Later
Hell, a baseball bat is and “assault-style weapon” if you use it to knock some one’s head off...
Be Ever Vigilant!
You must be one tough dude or you have a method I should learn!
1000 rnd in 2 hours?
They think 1000 rounds is large-scale? I’ve never owned one and from reading this for a few years, 1000 rounds is a day at the range.
To quote Nicholas Cage in the great movie LORD OF WAR, "hey I do a lot of shooting!!"
I really appreciate the Swiss and Israeli military posture whereby they require each citizen to have their weapon always ready and have a minimum of 1000 rounds.
Ok maybe a lil bit of embellisment there :)
But I can go through 1K pretty fast with a speedloader and five 30 round clips at my side
That gun would give me a real sore shoulder just sighting in!
5 round clip!LOL!
I've never shot any of the real military arms, so maybe they absorb the kick better. Or I need to learn a new method! LOL!
Ditto. In the end, a guy with one gun who knows how to use it and a bunch of ammo is more of a threat than a guy with a safe full of guns and a hundred rounds of ammo.
Look around for “Fred’s Guide to Becoming a Rifleman”. Sounds like you are not pulling the butt in tight enough.
BS
I've purchased more than this in the last few weeks. No 'visits' from DHS. Last shipment was 3K of Lake City 5.56 and 2K of 38 special
This does not pass the smell test.
“I call that getting by till the next gun show.”
That’s right. That is what you need to just have fun.
Maybe we should start calling them “kitty stompers” so everyone knows what they’re all about.
I HOPE that gun owner told the DHS people snooping on his ammo purchase, to go sit on a Coke bottle and rotate!
Thanks!
