When Did Your County's Jobs Disappear? An interactive map
Slate ^ | April 15, 2009 | Chris Wilson

Posted on 04/20/2009 11:34:26 AM PDT by happygrl

The economic crisis, which has claimed more than 5 million jobs since the recession began, did not strike the entire country at once. A map of employment gains or losses by county tells the story of how those job losses first struck in the most vulnerable regions and then spread rapidly to the rest of the country. As early as August 2007, for example—several months before the recession officially began—jobs were already on the decline in southwest Florida; Orange County, Calif.; much of New Jersey; and Detroit, while other areas of the country remained on the uptick.

Using the Labor Department's local area unemployment statistics, Slate presents the recession as told by unemployment numbers for each county in America. Because the data are not seasonally adjusted for natural employment cycles throughout the year, the numbers you see show the change in the number of people employed compared with the same month in the previous year. Blue dots represent a net increase in jobs, while red dots indicate a decrease. The larger the dot, the greater the number of jobs gained or lost. Click the arrows or calendar at the bottom to see each month of data. Click the green play button to see an animation of the data.

Click on link to see the map. The data presented starts in January 2007, after the 2006 elections. At that time, the only area in the country with high unemployment was Michigan. See what happens when the Democrat Congress is in charge.

Gee, most of the job losses have been in Blue States. Hope they like the change.

Democrat areas (ie, minorities and women) hit hardest.

Notice that the Republic of Texas continues to have job GAINS.

It claims 326 jobs GAINED in Brown County Ohio.

Sorry, thats complete and utter nonsense, I live here, I’m an employer here, and this is either a mistake, or a flat out LIE.

Funny -- it used to be that:

green = 'good' and red = 'bad'.

Now, it's:

blue = 'good' and red = 'red'.

WOW. Golly.... Looks like Democrats in Congress (they have had control since 2006) Got their wishes. LOTS of people with out jobs dependent on Government checks for their lively hoods. Looks like its gotten even worse since Obama took office. Here’s a thought, CUT TAXES on small businesses if you want to stimulate the economy. Give them more money to hire with and they WILL. The small American business owner LIKES hiring people, they can get more work done and make everyone including the government more money.

Yep, in 2006.

Democrats are responsible for the Recession. Congress as a whole is really because there are RINO’s that could have stopped them but didn’t.

Go Texas!

There’s another interesting area. Although it’s surrounded by devastation, the Washington DC metropolitan area is awash with new jobs! They must have a lot of busy people there (maybe the good schools are attracting talent).
