The Insider: Tax opponents find protesting to be their cup of tea (FR mentioned)

Could the humble tea bag slingshot the Republican Party into the 21st century?

The week's biggest news frenzy, beating out Somali pirates and Bo, the first family's new hypoallergenic ball of fur, came courtesy of the modern-day tea party tax protest.

It's probably the most exciting thing to happen on April 15 since the Titanic sank back in 1912. And we here at the Insider were grateful for something to distract us from the prospect of last-minute tax filing. In San Mateo, a tea party to protest rising federal spending was held on a thin strip of sidewalk in front of the Hillsdale Shopping Center. By 2 p.m., the number of protesters, many in historical-era costumes, had swelled to around 250, turning a stretch of El Camino Real into a tightly packed corridor of fiscal responsibility-loving, flag-waving tax protesters. Demographically, the crowd tended toward the older end of the age spectrum. Many seemed new to the whole "protest" thing. "This is my first time getting involved in activism," said Sara Dumont, a 76-year-old from South San Francisco. "I've always been interested, but this one really got me."

Dumont said she had gotten notice of the protest by e-mail, and advance notice of the event was posted on message boards such as the arch-conservative Web site www.freerepublic.com.

And despite the debate over the whether the tea parties were a true grass-roots movement or merely a cynical political device for the Republican party, it's important to note that, using the tools of grass-roots organizers, the event's promoters were able to pull in an impressive number of attendees, many in their 60s and 70s, in a predominantly Democratic district.

I'd rather it would slingshot their politics back to the 19th century when they still believed in limited Constitutional government, before Progressives like Teddy Roosevelt came on the scene.
