Obama Appointee Suggests Radical Plan for Newspaper Bailout

Influential Los Angeles Times columnist Rosa Brooks has hung up her journalistic hat and joined the Obama administration, but not before penning a public proposal calling for some radical ideas to help bail out the failing news industry.

Brooks, who has taken up a post as an adviser at the Pentagon, advocated upping "direct government support for public media" and creating licenses to govern news operations.

"Years of foolish policies have left us with a choice: We can bail out journalism, using tax dollars and granting licenses in ways that encourage robust and independent reporting and commentary, or we can watch, wringing our hands, as more and more top journalists are laid off," she wrote in her parting column on April 9.

Brooks said this would help rescue the industry from a "death spiral" and left the government unaccountable to the journalists who must keep it honest. "[I] can't imagine anything more dangerous than a society in which the news industry has more or less collapsed," she wrote.

every government bailout has included government control, either up front or post facto

Government bailout of the news media means government control of the media

Ah, but the foolishness lies in the hearts and minds of the so-called "journalists".

If my money is to pay them, I reserve the right to fire them on the basis of bias.

“The end of the article has it correct. The market will determine.”

I agree. But, what if there exists (including this article) a game plan for the govt. to control the media, regardless of the market?

"We can bail out journalism, using tax dollars and granting licenses in ways that encourage robust and independent reporting and commentary...

So buying a stake in and licensing the press will encourage it to be independant? Hah! Well it couldn't be more biased so I suppose it wouldnt make it worse...

First the newspapers, then television, then the holy grail...THE INTERNET.

Don't think for one minute they don't want to control it.

I believe this would be as unconstitutional as public funds being given to churches...

Any act supporting any of the press is an act in opposition to their competitors, and is, therefore, a violation of the first amendment.

Name one member of the Obama Administration that has even read the constitution.

Nah, more since from Woodrow Wilson, FDR and the rest of the early century “progressives” that Hillary Clinton wants to emulate. Man are we screwed. I am glad people are opening their eyes... hopefully it’s not too late.

Predicted quote only heard behind closed doors in the WH:

“And, of course, if we bail out the papers, we will fire editors we don’t like and print only the news we like.”

So wait, the government is going to grant licenses yet the media is going to watchdog the license givers...

Hmmm where have we seen this before? Maybe USSR? Chi-Coms?

More communism in the public arena pushed by a Obama leftist.

If the papers have no working model, they should be left to die.

If there is a genuine need, nature/entrepenuers will fill the vacuum.

Besides, all the “journalists that work for these Pravda rags, all are politically biased in their “reportage” so there is no way that they can be given non-profit status.
They all suck on the DemoLeftist tip.

The ULTIMATE “Fairness” Doctrine! Bailouts or forced Bailouts will replace votes and the voices of “We the People”...Hasn’t that been the M.O. thus far?

You know...

Say whatever you want about the secession movement that has been gaining momentum among the freedom loving people of this nation. I however, will welcome the day that people like this crazy beoch have ZERO influence in my life.

These people are running the show in the media, schools and the bureaucracies of almost every level of government. Did you happen to see what her appointment was to? That is simply terrifying.

Their form of insanity is no longer cute, funny or benign. Its time to step off this crazy train and let these people go over the cliff without us.
