FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE No. 09-70
Governor Comments on Dismissal of Charges Against Stevens
April 1, 2009, Juneau, Alaska - Governor Sarah Palin today released the following statement in response to the dismissal of the indictment against former U.S. Senator Ted Stevens: Senator Stevens deserves to be very happy today. What a horrible thing he has endured. The blatant attempts by adversaries to destroy ones reputation, career and finances are an abuse of our well-guarded process and violate our God-given rights afforded in the Constitution. It is a frightening thing to contemplate what we may be witnessing here the undermining of the political process through unscrupulous ploys and professional misconduct. Senator Stevens and I had lunch together recently at my home and he reiterated the faith he held for vindication; he never gave up hope. It is unfortunate that, as a result of the questionable proceedings which led to Senator Stevens conviction days before the election, Alaskans lost an esteemed statesman on Capitol Hill. His presence is missed.
She knows what she is talking about.
Any possibility she could void the last election and schedule a special election? just wondering.
The prosticutors who do these things should be jailed.
The Obama Justice Dept. drops charges against a Republican Senator originally filed by the Bush Justice Dept....? Something weird here.
Do I see a future nuisance ethics complaint here?

Even Chris Matthews was RAILING about the Injustice of this! Ted Stevens had written on a letter to the contractor to make sure that he got billed for the ENTIRE job, so as not to end up in trouble like Bob Toricelli....and the Justice Dept. hid it from the jury!!
Remember, the federales are not likely to prosecute any Democrats for this so it will have to be handled at the state level.
At the moment it looks pretty clear that someone took a payoff for political purposes.
Wow, Sarah Palin has a ton of courage to come out like this. Most governors would have done like W did to Scooter Libby and the border patrol agents.
Sorry...I’m a strong supporter of Sarah’s but I think she is wrong here. Steven’s is guilty. Charges were dismissed ‘cause of prosecution misconduct but Stevens still did the crime. Let him go gently into the night and don’t get any of his mud on you.
Bump
Only the courts can do that, but she has standing to demand that they hear her.
Noting Stevens’ age, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., said, “He’s already been punished enough.”
The above quote from a Washington Post article. Reid has aboslutely no honor within himself.

Oh my.
Chris Matthews was very critical of Sen. Stevens when he was still in office. Now that it’s over he finally starts to see the injustice. Democratic Senators wouldn’t let Bush fire Justice Dept. attorneys. If those attorneys had known they would be fired for misconduct, I wonder if they would have gone after Stevens.
if it was mr and mrs average america, the prosecutor would NEVER have caved like this. The chief would have just allowed the mistake to die in jail.
So it is not true as posted above that Stevens had written the contractor to make sure all charges were included and the prosecutor hid the letter?
Everyone has to learn how to connect the dots! It is a mistake to presume the the DOJ was “Bush’s”. Bush only chose the people at the top. Remember that Bush had already been “put on notice” with all the press from his firing a few U.S. Attorney’s. If he had stepped in to protect Stevens he would have been accused of political meddling.
Does anyone know if the U.S. Attorney involved had even been a Bush appointee, or were they a holdover from Clinton?
