A mysterious boom and light occurred over the skies of Norfolk and Virginia Beach, Va., on Sunday night, but just what caused the phenomenon is still unknown.
Calls from local residents to 911 began coming in at around 9:45 p.m. EDT, with some people reporting their doors and windows rattled when the boom went off, according to reports from WVEC-TV.
Similar reports in the past often have turned out to involve meteors, which can explode in the atmosphere to create a loud noise and bright flash of light that streaks across the sky. However, often times the source of events like this are not determined.
In a recent scientific first, meteorite fragments of an asteroid that was spotted in space before it exploded over the African desert in October were recently recovered and examined by scientists.
The jury is still out as to what caused Sunday's event.

Aren't baked beans pretty popular in Virginia?
Maybe it WAS “Bush’s” fault!;)

I remember sledding down Mount Trashmore in the big blizzard of ‘81. :D
I emailed my brother who still lives in the area. He says he didn’t see or hear anything, but it’s been all over the local news.

Just curious...
I’m thinking sonic booms as a result of meteors close in the atmosphere.
Somebody is testing their new aircraft. Funny how loud sonic booms are heard near Air Force bases. It could be the new Mach 5 or higher ramjet ATK just went public with. They retired the F-117’s for more than the fact a few Serbs with the latest Russian gear could find them.
When Ughrie spacecraft drop out of hyperspace in the upper atmosphere, there is an accompanying bright flash of light and then a sonic boom. Nothing unexpected here...
That was “The Spirit of ‘76” leaving the country while it’s still free...............
There were a lot of comments at one of the news sites from people who witnessed whatever it was. Some said the sky lit up like daylight, then boom, then a rush of strong wind. Doesn’t sound like a sonic boom to me. I figure exploding meteor.
Mount Trashmore is one of my wife’s favorite places to walk, along with the boardwalk and Norfolk Botanical Gradens.
LoL!
Actually, the serbs guessed the flight paths of earlier F-117 strikes and positioned their SAM launchers and spotters accordingly. It is believed that the crews and spotters were able to locate and track the F-117 visually with infra-red and night vision systems. They lobbed several missiles at it to increase the chance of hitting. It also didn't help that the moon was full or nearly full on a clear night. The F-117 might as well been flying with it's gear down and all it's lights on.
You are partially correct.
The facts are that the ingress and egress routes were the same night after night (commanders had no choice), and when the F-117 opened its doors for the weapons drop, it became like a flashlight in a dark room (easy to see on radar), then SA-3’s (radar guided) were launched and hit near the jet and it was lost.
Or earth making pre earth quake notice here in california that happens a day or so before one often blue light.
Move along, nothing to see here.
