Its mother has long since departed the scene. As, indeed, has its entire species.
But this giant egg is a great survivor. It was laid around 400 years ago by one of the great elephant birds of Madagascar.
Before becoming extinct in the 17th century, the flightless creature was the world's largest bird, standing 10ft tall and weighing half a ton.

It has a great social history. The Madagascan elephant bird was the only giant bird to exist with man and man caused its extinction.

The Madagascan elephant bird was the only giant bird to exist with man and man caused its extinction. It would have been the bird's job to adapt.
Therefor, it caused its own extinction by failing to do so.

The Madagascan elephant bird was the only giant bird to exist with man and man caused its extinction. A debatable point. The moas of New Zealand were even taller, up to 12' tall, although a good deal lighter in weight. They were exterminated by the Maori.

Fancy shelling out £5,000 for a 400-year-old stale egg? Oh, bird egg. I thought that maybe Helen Thomas was trying in vitro fertilization.

I wouldn’t want to be around a bird that had adapted to being shot. Especially one that big.

Call me silly but I think a 10 ft. bird was destined for extinction.......regardless of who or what caused its demise. (unless you could build a cage big enough for it and teach it to talk)

Do they have any idea what a kick from a bird weighing 1000 lbs would do to you? I'm sure man coexisted with this bird kind of like man coexists with Lions and Tigers. An Emu can run straight through a barbed wire fence without getting killed and they are only 6’ maybe a couple of hundred pounds.

There was also a New Zealand eagle that survived primarily by hunting the giant birds, now also extinct. That eagle was NOT flightless, and was strong enough to pick up a human and fly away with it.

Man coexisted well enough with giant birds to have them all for dinner.
