This is Not the Freedom Tower: Money Trumps Patriotism in the Name Change to 1 WTC
New York Post ^ | March 27, 2009 | Tom Topousis

Posted on 03/27/2009 6:58:55 AM PDT by Sergeant Tim

Freedom is out of fashion at Ground Zero.

Once hailed as a beacon of rebirth in the aftermath of Sept. 11, the Freedom Tower has been stripped of its patriotic name -- which has been swapped out for the more marketable "One World Trade Center," Port Authority officials conceded yesterday.

More than seven years after the terror attacks and amid an effort to market the tower to international tenants, sentiment gave way to practicality.

"As we market the building we will ensure that the building is presented in the best possible way," said PA Chairman Anthony Coscia.

"One World Trade Center is its address. It's the address that we're using. It's the one that's easiest for people to identify with, and, frankly, we've gotten a very interested and warm reception to it."

Debra Burlingame, whose brother Charles Burlingame was the pilot aboard American Airlines Flight 77 that was hijacked and crashed into the Pentagon, said the renaming of the tower is one more example that the nation is forgetting 9/11.

"If we can't say the word freedom out loud, God help us," she said.

"I understand the decision from a marketing point of view. But it saddens me that it's no longer economically viable to declare who we are."

If the enslaved muslims in “muslim lands” had freedom of religion, we wouldn’t be facing the threat of international terrorism that we do today (and others have faced for the past 1000 years).

Our nation used to put a value for national security on our domestic production/harvest/resources.

We now ship our lumber overseas and prohibit use of domestic coal and oil.

We could have freedom from want. But Obama says we have too much already and must “pay” to “right” injustices in this world.

Can you point to someplace that shows FDR specifically establishing socialist “womb to the tomb” nannystate as a means of seeing that we have “freedom from want”? That would go for radio ownership, employment, higher education, and the whole lot, if we are to take that meaning. Wikipedia itself doesn’t carry much weight.

all I am saying is that FDR was a closet Bolshevic and 2 of his so called four freedoms were far from freedom, by instituting a ‘freedom from want’, they must first pick my pocket and take my freedoms away.

did you notice the first 2 freedoms were the same...the first amendment?????

and gun control started with FDR so, so much for freedom from fear(unless you have a cop in your back pocket).....

Opponents of the Second Amendment started to mobilize at the federal level in the 1930s. It came during the New Deal, when the federal government was growing rapidly. Two laws enacted during this period, the National Firearms Act of 1934 and the Federal Firearms Act of 1938, established the first federal gun controls, they introduced the concept of national regulation of firearms.

Yes he was institutionalizing socialism into our system and had a VP who’d visited Stalin’s gulags and said nothing. Reds had infested our government.

We now have leadership that deliberately sabotages this nation’s ability to provide for itself from the bounty of natural resources and labor and castigates the populace as living too high on the hog so we must PAY to solve global poverty and do without (things like AC), not because we keep them from having what we have, but to show we “care”.

The American Dream is dead and Obama killed it. Just as he said he’d do in his campaign speeches “America must change”.

This is much worse than the Democrat leadership of old. No matter how “incremental” the socialist programs were, this is an administration that says “we cannot go on living as we used to”. To glory days are past us (by deliberate intent, not because we are incapable of returning to freedom from want).

actually I thought the freedom tower moniker was a bit like freedom fries.

Calling it the World Trade Center is putting back the name that was there before.

I agree with this change.

No one freaking calls Newark International Airport the official name of Liberty International Airport either.

Who cares what they call the stupid building? Freedom my ass. They were martryrs. The building should be dedicated to the exposure of Islamofascism, with “Fitna” and “Obsession” shown 10 times a day on huge screens.

I don't know if anyone mentioned this, as I haven't read all of the comments yet.

But this morning on FOX they were quite concerned because apparently there was some chatter about China not wanting to rent space in the new building if it was called The Freedom Tower.

It seems even the word “freedom” offends the brutal communistic regime of China.

Let them pound sand fried rice.

When we capitulate to our enemies (especially those that are considered "friends" and trading partners) they always take that as a sign of weakness.

Look how almost the whole world is laughing at the USA because of it's leadership and disastasterous financial and political decisions and trends.

That’s my choice too, and it should be two buildings.

This is sickening. I heard on one of the cable news stations that the first office rented out was to a Chinese company. Commies don't like freedom.

We've come a long way in 8 years from the Angry American and, “We'll put a boot in your a@$, it's the American way!!!”. Welcome back the same mindset that brought us 9/11. *sigh*

The first lease was signed by some Chinese business.

Put it together: they can't have "freedom" in their address, can they ?

“...the whole world is laughing at the USA because of its leadership and disastrous financial and political decisions...”

True. In keeping with this trend, really we should not be so presumptuous as to name the building ourselves. A United Nations Committee should be appointed to come up with a list of names, which will then be voted upon by the U.N. Security Council. Just to be sure we are really with the new globalist zeitgeist, that name will be subject to final approval by The Arab League.

In an address also known as the Four Freedoms speech, FDR proposed four points as fundamental freedoms humans “everywhere in the world” ought to enjoy

There was a discussion about this in The Rare Coin episode of Amos n Andy, when Kingfish and Andy were in court:

Kingfish: They can't do a thing to us, not a thing!

Andy (looking at the police on each side): They can't huh? Well, we ain't 'zactly sloshin' around in the Four Freedoms!
