Mayor Bloomberg Urges New York State to Pass Bill to Allow Gay Marriage
Daily News ^ | 3/26/09 | Adam Lisberg

Mayor Bloomberg said Wednesday night he stands ready to ask the Legislature to allow gay marriage in New York State, but doesn't know when the time will be right.

"We see that the tide is turning, that support is mounting," Bloomberg told the annual dinner of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center. "Make no mistake, the time will come ... and we will pass this bill."

Bloomberg has made similar pledges to testify in Albany for almost three years, but the GOP-run state Senate blocked any such bill.

Democrats now run the Senate but have not been able to round up votes to pass the measure - increasing pressure on Bloomberg to follow through.

"I don't know whether it's more likely or not" this year, Bloomberg said before his speech. "If they consider a bill, I think they should pass it, and I would be happy to testify for it."

The mayor was received warmly by the crowd, which cited his administration as a model for gay-friendly initiatives. Still, marriage remains the top item on the gay political agenda.

"We need Republican votes to pass this. He gave a lot of money to the Republican state Senate campaign last year," said Paul Schindler, editor in chief of Gay City News. "When the gay community gets politicians to say they're on our side, the next question is, How soon?"

Bloomberg and City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, who is gay, both said U.S. Sen. Chuck Schumer's newfound support for gay marriage is a sign that the tide is turning.

"Everything's different this year in a way that I think is very positive for the movement of the bill," Quinn told the Daily News. "When we get the green light from our leaders in the [state] Senate that it's the right time to go, he and I will be up there."

Let's see... Hmmm...

Bloomberg stands for no smoking and no transfats and gay marriage. Oh, and don't forget the calorie count signs.

Let's consider a reasonable compromise, shall we?

It's really pretty simple.

1. Gays can get married.

2. However, not to each other.

How's that for a middle ground solution?

.

Originally, the conservative side of the issue was outraged at court cases in which judges imposed homosexual marriage. Part of the outrage was that judges were imposing a fundamental change in the definition of marriage, and part of the outrage was based on us knowing that nobody in America had voted for homosexual marriage.

But now, if we see legislatures voluntarily approve homosexual marriage, what can we say? If they have gone through the democratic process, can we say that society has fundamentally changed how it views homosexual marriage?

You figure too that homosexual marriage cases will work their way through the federal courts. And if numerous states have approved it voluntarily, it’s easier to see a future U.S. Supreme Court imposing homosexual marriage nationwide.

The gay activists are looking for their Roe Vs. Wade type case on marriage. They may get it sooner than we think.

Bloomberg should be kept so far away from the republican party that we can’t even smell him! Any republican who takes money from Bloomberg should be drummed out of the party.

I guess it goes without saying then that the courts have betrayed America and their oaths to the constitution.

In fairness to Emperor Bloomberg, calling him a liberal, Democrat, Republican whatever just makes him and both parties laugh. He doesn't care.

He is an authoritarian dictator. A silly man with a lot of money.

What I see is...

There are some people who think gay marriage is fine. All Holy, and sacred and all that.

There are other people who think it is an abomination, an unnatural perversion.

Now, the interesting part is this:
No matter which side of the equation you fall under, CAN YOU REALLY BELIEVE THAT IF THE GOVERNMENT PASSES A LAW, THAT’S GOING TO CHANGE YOUR OPINION?

Get real. Of course not.

No, but the entire aim of the homo-leftists is to FORCE others to behave as if they've changed their opinion.

Bingo. All totalitarianism today comes from the left. As Dennis Prager has argued, the right wants the government to have less power so the idea of “right-wing totalitarianism” is oxymoronic.
