IBM will cut about 5,000 jobs in the United States, adding to similarly large cuts in the past few months, sources with knowledge of the matter told Reuters on Wednesday. The job cuts will account for over 4 percent of IBM's U.S. workforce, which totaled around 115,000 at the end of 2008. The sources, who were not authorized to speak publicly on the issue, said the cuts will mostly be in IBM's global services business, which includes outsourcing and consulting services.
An International Business Machines Corp spokesman declined to comment. The company, which had a total workforce of 398,455 as of end 2008, has not disclosed how many jobs it has cut so far this year, but has said it was making "structural changes" to reduce spending and improve productivity.

Welcome to Mumbai! We like American jobs, you get 3 to 4 of us for the cost of one American!
Well unless this is the shovel!
My dad used to say to me that if I didn't straighten up and fly right I would end up digging ditches for a living. Well, it looks like that now it is something to be aspired to.
How any company functions in Occupied America is beyond me: massive corporate taxes, armies of crooked, looting lawyers, a corrupt judiciary, and hateful bureaucratic hyper-regulation.
Notice that most of once 100% USA jobs at IBM are now outside of Occupied America.
Once upon a time, Americans were the most educated people on the planet. Thanks to Social Promotions and the Teacher’s Unions, students no longer have to learn the ‘tough’ subjects like Math, Chemistry, Physics and instead can focus on soft subjects like art, music and dancing.
Heck, we even have classes where they teach that math isn’t important - what is important is how you feel about things.
Just because we are stupid enough to buy a load of crap, doesn’t mean the rest of the world accepts it. Consider the AVERAGE Indian high school student speaks a minimum of 3 languages; English, Hindi (the official language of India) and whatever local dialect is spoken in his home state (there are over 1,500 of them). Many of the Indian engineers I have met speak Japanese, German and French on top of English, Hindi and their native tongue.
So, don’t blame India for picking up where we were foolish enough to stop. They value education, they value hard work - we value ‘Feelings’.
I think it is important to note that these jobs are in Global Business Services. If the businesses that you are servicing are increasingly in Asia etc. then the jobs necessarily have to go there. I'm sure that doesn't account for all of the offshoring but it does account for a lot of it.
You fail to answer the ‘why India’ question. I submit that their culture is now superior to our new culture.
They still hold to traditional values (marriage and family), they hold drugs, immorality and illegal activites in utter contempt. We worship them.
Want to mess around in class, fine ... there are endless numbers of poor people. They concentrate their efforts on the achievers - we focus on the losers. In fact, we have no limit on how much time, money and effort we will spend on a loser - we punish achievers.
We have lost sight of what made us great, we reward incompetence, greed, slackers and bums. We punish students who do well (geeks, nerds and the valedictorians). We punish the genius’s and allow them to be bored in class. The class moves at the pace of the slowest student. Tests are designed to pass the lowest performancing students, not based upon knowledge, but based upon population.
Maybe IBM will sack some of the people in their “Let’s Build a Better World” commercials. Esp that guy with the belly button length hair and bad go-tee. What’s with the close-ups of unattractive people?
You don’t have it right. These are not jobs servicing Asia. They are jobs servicing american businesses. It is just what an above poster said. They can employ multiple Indian resources to 1 american resource and not lower their rates.
Time to shut off the H1B visas to India and China, period.
IBM manufacturing is shifting out of the USA to flee the democrat party with only one in five IBM jobs left in the Occupied USA (once 100%).
>>whatever local dialect is spoken in his home state (there are over 1,500 of them).
Just one nit.
I have no doubt about the 1500 dialects, but they are part of a family of about 25 languages or so - Punjabi, Bengali, Marathi and then the whole flock of Southern Indian languages like Tamil, Malayalee etc.
However you are right about the emphasis on achievement.
But, US Higher Education (Masters, PhD’s) is still the Gold Standard of the world.
IBM will cut about 5,000 jobs in the United States
Only 5000? This is proof obama’s plan is working! Without his plan we would have lost 500 million jobs!!!

Joe Stalin had shovel ready jobs for millions...dig a hole large enough to contain the shoveler’s body, then kneel for the bullet to the back of the head. The next shovel ready job was to shovel in that hole, dig another, kneel, etc.
You are correct. We celebrate the freak, the loser and the slacker...
The post-modern generations of “lost” people who put sexual conquest, substance abuse and misguided Liberal (diversity, equality, homosexuality, climate change, etc.) is a failure.
Achivement takes strength, will, talent, ability and sacrifice. We seem to think we can rest on the laurels of a strong, vibrant post-WWII America, when for 50 years the Left has pushed, fought and now seems to be succeeding in eroding our ethics, morals, religious dogma and pushed a minimalist/medicore mindset that does exactly what you alluded to: We make the smart keep pace with the imbeciles because of an overwhelming “feeling” of keeping things “fair”.
Force IBM to unionize with Card Check, and the other 115,000 will go overseas.
