Pictures of hunger: Photo project captures the life of those in need [Where are the fathers?]
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette ^ | March 1, 2009 | Pauline Arrillaga

... she makes chicken for her children but eats Oodles of Noodles herself...

... She is 29, with twin babies and a toddler, facing eviction because she's $300 behind on rent...

... The little girl, 15-16 months old, wears a striped top that swallows her tiny arms. Her nose is runny, her eyes empty. Hers is not the picture of hunger that Americans are accustomed to seeing. She isn't emaciated, like those living in squalid conditions in famine-stricken countries, but she is underweight and malnourished, often fed chips and sugary drinks instead of milk and formula...

... poor diets lacking in fruits and vegetables, in children who are fed fatty, cheap foods like hot dogs or ramen noodles...

... Even before the economy tanked, some 36 million adults and children struggled with hunger in 2007...

... She doesn't pity herself, not when she gives her kids hot-dogs because that's all she can afford, not each and every day that she goes without breakfast. Not on this day, when she has yet to put a single morsel in her mouth. Years ago, when the hunger was almost too much to bear, she learned a trick: She'd flip through takeout menus to look at pictures of the food and, eventually, just looking was enough to diminish her cravings.

... one of her 2-year-old, his arm outstretched, asking her welfare case officer for something to eat...

... Foodstuff hidden behind piles of clothes so it's not eaten too fast....

Socially conscious people are not interested in educating the “downtrodden” about healthy behavior. They are more interested in organizing their communities to threaten society at large to gain more political power.

My big question is if she was not married and so darn poor why was she on her back with legs open when she should have been on her feet either at school improving herself, at work, or trying to get a job.

Watch an hour of BET and then ask that question.

Search engines are our friends as are our liberaries!

Our downtown library has a large bank of Internet connected computers. Whenever I walk by, I notice that every computer is being used, and the users are almost exclusively minority.

Every screen displays a social networking site.

I don't think they are going online to educate themselves about nutrition.

I just saw a statistic that claimed 70% of black babies born in this country are born to single mothers. Since most of the single mothers are probably uneducated and unemployable, they must plan on being supported by welfare, much like the so-called octo mom.

I will take your word for that. Knowing my own ratio of ‘fun too study’ it does not surprise me. And thank you for not pointing out my spelling of the building full of books ;^)

I don't think the extension service personnel are very keen on going places where they have not been asked. But they will hold live demonstrations for those that want it. Might be something a 'community organizer' should look into, eh?

“...often fed chips and sugary drinks instead of milk and formula...”

That crap costs money. Clearly the malnurishment is due to a stupid - not poor - mother.

I know hunger exists but it is mosty self induced by being a drug or alcohol abuser or an ignorant social parasite

The problem is that most of the hunger resulting from drug/alcohol abuse and other poor choices, is hungry children whose parents are the ones making the poor choices. If you're the child of such parents, your hunger is not "self-inflicted". We should stop providing any sort of welfare benefits to people who are abusing drugs and alcohol and take their children away from them -- it's not like hunger is the only serious problem facing children in these sorts of home situations.

I agree...does this woman know how easy it is to make a chicken soup and then stir some milk into 2 cups of Bisquick, and drop them into it by the spoonful?

Chicken and dumplings, lady. THAT’LL stick to your ribs.

Or this: Buy some pre-packaged mixed salad greens (every supermarket has at least one brand on sale every week), get some chicken breast, a can of mandarin oranges, some dried cranberries, and some oil and vinegar. You’ve just made yourself a chicken salad that is pretty, tasty and nutritious. (Toss on some chick peas for extra protein.)

Sheesh!

Regards,

PS: I don’t buy the “starving” thing, either.

I lived on short grain brown rice and green beans for years. Topped with Parmesan cheese and Good Seasons Italian dressing, I never got tired of it.

Besides the government programs available to this woman, she could walk into any half decent Church, and her babies would get what they needed.

Nancy and Barney want the loan money back. What I would like back is all the money spent on dead beat blacks and whites in the so called War on Poverty, the Great Society, food stamps, welfare money over the past 50 years. That is what I would like to have back. If we had all that, we could fund this country for decades.
