The Primal diet: the silliest diet ever?

Hollywood's latest food fad is the most extreme yet. Do not try this at home

Julia Llewellyn Smith

John, a 36-year-old from London, is discussing the foods his diet allows. Carrots perhaps? Or quinoa? “I'm very keen on a raw hare carcass,” he says. “Raw mallard is good too. So's raw tongue and raw organ meat. Ideally, it'll have been sitting around for three or four weeks and be really off. Some people like it when it's liquid mush but I prefer it really off, but still so you can stick a fork in it.”

If the Pineapple, Atkins and Cabbage Soup diets seemed extreme, then consider the fanatics worldwide following the latest allegedly detoxifying trend - the Primal Diet, an eating plan consisting of raw meat, eggs and dairy - preferably past their sell-by dates.

The diet, the latest to hit Hollywood, was founded by Aajonus (pronounced oj-enus) Vonderplanitz, a 62-year-old nutritionist from California - and it can be only a matter of time before it's endorsed by a twig-thin starlet.

The theory is that raw fats bind to the toxins in the body, which are then more readily transported out of the system.

At its most basic level adherents exist on 95 per cent raw meat, including chicken (made more palatable with a marinade of herbs and spices). When they eat out they can rely on culinary classics such as sashimi, steak tartare and beef carpaccio.

The remaining 5 per cent is made up with vegetable juices and low-carbohydrate fruits, such as avocados. True aficionados, however, favour “high” meat (so called because of Vonderplanitz's claims that it inspires a natural high), with a small sideor

Only a slight improvement from standard British fare.

Yeah, let's face it. There's no such thing as fine English cuisine.

Um, fat won't stop parasitic worms. Don't eat raw meat unless you want to take that risk.

Here's a diet that's even more bizarre.

This isn't new. There were/are plenty of Capitol politicians and Hollywood actors/actresses that are renown for eating raw meat .

It was later popularized as the Lewinsky Diet

Sure there is. They make wonderful breakfast although why they seem to like cold toast is beyond me. Their high teas are also great. As for the rest.... well you got fed up nicely twice a day.

“Well on a diet like that they will be pooping and ralphing a lot.”

We all know that most Hollywoods types are full of “sh**). This diet must suit them to a tee.

The raw food diet has been going on for a while now. I though more people knew about it.

In a way, it makes sense. We are, basically, animals who ingest food just like any other animal. I can't see Nature allowing for animals to cook their food. While cooking kills certain bacteria, it also leeches nutrients and breaks down fiber.

I wouldn't partake of it myself, nor am I saying this diet is a good thing, but one would think more FReepers would approach subjects with a bit more logic and reason instead of going into the 'these people are stupid' routine.

While cooking kills certain bacteria, it also leeches nutrients and breaks down fiber.

And the breaking down of the fiber helps us get more nutrients out of the food so you actually gain from cooking all the way around.

And yes this is stupid. Nature provided us with fire, sadly a number of animals are to dumb to know how to use it. These same animals eat their own feces and the feces of other animals.

If any human promotes eating poop as a diet I will also call them stupid.

Trying to redefine the subject under discussion into one that doesn't exist is a straw-man argument, a type of argument normally utilized by the intellectually challenged.

Your conclusion that animals ate raw and rotting food so it is a good and healthy thing for humans to do so was inspiring.

I just followed your statement to it's logical end.

If a straw-man exists it is yours not mine.

Your conclusion that animals ate raw and rotting food

LOL! Try reading it again-

MT>> We are, basically, animals who ingest food just like any other animal. I can't see Nature allowing for animals to cook their food.

Nope, nothing about ROTTING food, only that animals eat raw food.

-----

so it is a good and healthy thing for humans to do so was inspiring.

Wrong again, Einstein:
MT>>I wouldn't partake of it myself, nor am I saying this diet is a good thing

-----

I just followed your statement to it's logical end.

ROFLMAO! Saying eating our own feces is a 'logical end' to a discussion about the health benefits [or lack thereof] of a raw food diet???

Newsflash! Many animals EAT THEIR OWN OFFSPRING.....are you saying that, too would be a 'logical end' to this discussion?

-----

If a straw-man exists it is yours not mine.

What exists is apparently someone who reads what they wish to read without even a passing acknowledgment of logic or reason. Your own statements above prove that fact.

Human animals eating food in its natural forms does not equal wholesale acting in an animalistic fashion.

I though most FReepers had more intelligence than to come to such an asinine conclusion, but I guess I was mistaken.
