MANAMA, Bahrain — The U.S. Navy's 5th Fleet says two of its vessels — a submarine and an amphibious ship — collided in the Strait of Hormuz between Iran and the Arabian peninsula early Friday.
The military says in a statement that the collision occurred around 1:00 a.m. local time on Friday (5 p.m. EDT, Thursday).
The USS Hartford, a submarine, collided with an amphibious ship, the USS New Orleans.
According to the Bahrain-based 5th Fleet, 15 soldiers aboard the Hartford were slightly injured but able to return to duty. No injuries were reported aboard the New Orleans.

If they did have soldiers onboard, they may have been doing some shallow water or close to the surface stuff.

I took a charting and navigating course with the Coast Guard, we learned how to use dead reckoning, use the Compass Rose to chart (true north vs magnetic north and all that stuff). They hold these courses for free, we’ve done some sailing so we decided to take them. Very worth while I thought.
Did they mention the sex of the ship captain?

Let me slip on the tin foil hat. One could suggest that either someone, or some thing is messing with the GPS systems. It could be a natural phenomenon, or it could be someone sending us a message.

I’ve been contradicted by fellow Freeper Andy Jackson. See his post #54 wherein he states that the sub should have been able to avoid the collision. I’ll defer to his expertise since he’s “Been There, Done That.”
I was re-stating an analysis that I had read pertaining to an earlier incident a few years back (think it was in the Med). It sounded reasonable, but the sub sailors don’t buy it.
There’s a disturbing trend going on, with this the third or fourth such accident I’ve seen in recent months. What’s going on with shiphandling and basic seamanship in the USN these days???

There's no dishonor if those responsible find new career paths, effective immediately. We don't know how this happened, although my guess is that the submarine was shallow (the other option is that the amphib went deep, but that seems unlikely). A quick investigation will provide the truth, but a second guess is that everybody was at fault, if the sub was at least broached: both COs, both XOs, possibly the navigators, and certainly the OODs. Someone did a really dumb thing, but everybody failed to anticipate that blunder and to be ready to react to prevent that one blunder from leading to an oopsie, and for that reason they all need to find new career paths.
She’s an Amphib, whether she actually makes beach transitions or not.
Her ship type is Amphibious Transport Dock.
Her assignment is as part of the Amphibious Fleet.
