The phasing out of traditional light bulbs could cause misery for thousands who have light-sensitive skin disorders, medical experts warned yesterday.
Dr Robert Sarkany said some low-energy bulbs gave vulnerable people painful rashes and swelling.
He backed calls by patient groups for the Government to give medical exemptions for those at risk.
The warning comes as British shops start to clear their shelves of traditional bulbs, which are being replaced by more energy-efficient versions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

We are stocking up on traditional bulbs. My husband has scotopic sensitivity so we cannot use the new bulbs at all.
When we run out of bulbs we may have to re-wire the house for low voltage or go to using candles.
The other thing that bothers me about this is the new bulbs cannot just be thrown out, they have to be treated as Haz-mat.
Until they start a fire...

As a fellow engineer, what pisses me off is that a) the touted longer lifetime of cfc bulbs ain’t what it was said to be, and b) the “instant bright” feature works at beginning of life, but soon diminishes.
Plus, you can’t just throw them away when they crap out.
At least, you’re not supposed to. ;-)

It's been a scam from the start. Fortunately the economics of LED lighting will make CFLs obsolete before they make much further inroads.

Works for me. Incidentally, LED fabs and toolmakers are some of the few in semi mfg that still have any dough.
I have yet to try any “screw-in” LED lighting, though.

i wouldn’t - work or starve with exceptions for those truly unable. Laziness is not adequate cause.
We’ve been using almost all compact flourescent bulbs for years, because it saves us a lot of money. It cuts your lighting bill by 3/4, and we can get GE bulbs at the local hardware store for a dollar apiece.
When LED lights finally are developed to a reasonable point—color and price—then we’ll go over to those, probably.
But it really irks me that the government is making people do this. That sucks. If it makes sense, most people will do it.
We’ve also gone over to energy efficient refrigerators and clothes washer for the same reason. It may not pay to replace these before the wear out, but ours were on their last legs. Again, we’ve saved a lot on our power bills.
Pretty soon you will have to have a prescription to get an incandescent light bulb in the US.
It is because they are dictating their use and their total lack of credibility, on ALL subjects, that I refuse to even try these lights.
oh-'rilly? I dump them in the garbage with all the coke cans, newspapers and other garbage. I told my wife if she wants to recycle, go for it. Me, I 'm chunking it in the garbage.
I thought about the trash nazis and if they go on to "inspect" my trash then I'd just put the used bulbs in with the dog poop and rotten vegies.
Just too much to stock up on nowadays: emergency food, ammo, incandescent bulbs.....the list goes on.
How do you know when it burns out?
Not to mention the hazard from the poisonous mercury these bulbs contain.
First they came for the light bulbs but I didn’t speak out because I wasn’t a light bulb...
