Low-energy bulbs will cause agony for thousands of skin disorder sufferers, doctors warn
The Daily Mail (UK) ^ | 14th March 2009 | David Derbyshire

The phasing out of traditional light bulbs could cause misery for thousands who have light-sensitive skin disorders, medical experts warned yesterday.

Dr Robert Sarkany said some low-energy bulbs gave vulnerable people painful rashes and swelling.

He backed calls by patient groups for the Government to give medical exemptions for those at risk.

The warning comes as British shops start to clear their shelves of traditional bulbs, which are being replaced by more energy-efficient versions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

As an engineer, I’m all for more efficient technology. But push it because it lets us use our resources better, not because you’re hawking some climate change scam. Why not put the tech out there and let the market decide?

A good idea would be to head to the dollar stores and stock up on traditional incandescent bulbs, then BLOAT!!

Think of all that marvelous dim light in the halls of JP Morgan Chase. You’ll need mining hats to see and glow sticks to highlight who & what’s in the corners, but everyone can go blind at the same rate.

Planting lawn grass causes misery for more than a few thousands, varying from mild to miserable.

Don’t worry. There will be “rough service” bulbs for trouble lights for years to come. You can use these in ordinary lamps too. They are usually only 60 watts though. But they last a lot longer than regular bulbs.

So, put a glass filter or lamp bowl, etc over the CF lamp and block the UV.

Or wait a year till the LED lamps come down in price.

It does not take a lot for the Press to dub something "Rocket Science".

Why is any govt dictating which light bulbs we use? Talk about tyranny.

I have oregano spreading across my lawn.
It’s a weed.

Pfft...lay in a 50 year supply of incandescent bulbs. Doesn’t cost that much. I began building my stockpile as soon as I realized they were pulling conventional 100 W and 60 W bulbs off the market without telling us in advance.

I am not sure that would have helped much a few months ago when one sparked, flamed, and smoked in my kitchen.

The things are dangerous. In many ways.

Or wait a year till the LED lamps come down in price.

That is exactly what I'm doing.

I like the new ones because I have high ceilings and they last a lot longer - fewer trips up the ladder. A lower electric bill is another plus.

I use 100 Watt bulbs to keep my well house pump from freezing in winter.

I have a small stockpile.

So are blackberries here. Nasty and invasive. My first house here, it took two years and much applied chemistry to eliminate them.

Oregano is wondeful.

We just mow it, it smells great, and stays green in a dry spell.

Much better than a lawn.
