Surfer that he is, President Obama should know a riptide when he's in one. The center usually is the safest, most productive place in politics, but perhaps not now, not in a once-in-a-century economic crisis.
Swimming in the middle, he's denounced as a socialist by conservatives, criticized as a polite accommodationist by government-is-the-answer liberals, and increasingly, dismissed as being in over his head by technocrats.
Luckily for Obama, the public still likes and trusts him, at least judging by the latest polls, including NEWSWEEK's.But, in ways both large and small, what's left of the American establishment is taking his measure and, with surprising swiftness, they are finding him lacking.
They have some reasons to be concerned. I trace them to a central trait of the president's character: he's not really an in-your-face guy.

Don't forget the fed take over of the banks.
Unfortunately, they've locked us in the trunk and forced us to go along for this ride.
His words and actions are diametrically opposed. In every case! This is the asshat who called the stimupork "a well-planned and disciplined bill".
right.
Come on! BO SAID he wasn't a socialist, that's certainly good enough for me!
You’re right....there are huge consequences of succumbing to this “historical election” crap and all the imagery BOs people used. I blame the media.
Was it his mentor Lenin or someone else who said, tell a lie, tell it often and it will be accepted as truth. Frankly, I have little doubt that Obama believes gutting capitalism is the best thing he can do for the country and that taking the heat right now is part of what he considers “discipline” to stay the course against public outcry.
“These people need a dose of reality.”
Alternately, voters need one.
Wasn’t that Hitler’s propagandist? Goebbels, I think.
They’ve got it now!
bump that
Obama is no socialist
Doesn't it occur to people like Fineman that there might be a reason they have to keep telling us this?
I have no strong opinion on Fineman, but sometimes in his articles he seems to be stretching, and this is one of those times. The whole piece is unfocused, like he's trying to say everything's fine, or give Obama advice, but doesn't really have much to say.
Saying he's not an in-your-face guy doesn't make it so,Howard. Obama is as rude and smug as a math team member who's just won homecoming king by mistake and keeps crowing about it.
He’s also not “in the center” of any political movement, save socialism. To Fineman, that is the center.
This guy is delusional!
I checked this morning before I left for work, final poll tally was at 60% “F”
Wonder if “Got a tingle” Chris Mathews will report on that one? Oh wait, that would be “reporting”. That’s not his job!
You might be right.
How did loon’s wife graduate from Princeton with that dreadful thesis of hers? My 7th grader could construct a paragraph better than that.
That would be a “bully” - like Clinton,
getting in the faces of those who had no power to confront him.
