Google Earth Uncovers British Nuclear Sub Base, Missile Facility
Online Sun via Fox News ^ | 09 Mar 2009

Posted on 03/09/2009 1:15:24 PM PDT by rawhide

BRITAIN’S nuclear defence HQ could be under threat from terrorists using Google Earth. Close-up aerial views of the top-secret Naval base are on the computer program — available for free over the internet.

It even reveals the longitude and latitude of the facility in Faslane, Scotland — home to the UK’s Trident-armed nuclear submarine force.

And pictures clearly show two vast Vanguard Class submarines — each capable of carrying 16 nuclear missiles.

Military experts warn that would make it easy for terrorists to launch accurate mortar or rocket attacks.

One told The Sun: "A strike on our nuclear capability would cause untold devastation. Terrorists could have a field day, knowing exactly where to aim strikes to cause the maximum devastation."

As well as HM Naval Base Clyde at Faslane, the program also clearly shows the Trident Special Area near Coulport, just 10 miles away, where nuclear warheads are stored.

That’s no accident. My house isn’t that clear on Google Earth.

Gee, who's revealing secrets here? Is it Google, or is it the Sun and Fox News?

Jeez, you can’t hide a submarine base in plain sight in these times, anyway. The Russians have satellites that know where everything is, and I’m sure they would sell the info to any terrorist who could pay cash.

My house isn’t, but the nuclear power plant where I used to work is clear.

Got lucky, saw subs there years ago. Here's the actual Google Map link to the sub base.

How often are the photos on Google Earth updated? Assuming Johnny Jihad can get his (heavy) mortar tube in range of the dock -- yet beyond Line-of-Sight -- how will he know HMS "WhatsHisName" is tied up at the pier?

My house isn’t that clear on Google Earth.

But then again, your house doesn't have any thermonuclear warheads hidden within its walls,.....

Actually, yours might be that clear within a year. If you haven't downloaded Google Earth recently and seen the 'camera' photo icons, click on one. I was amazed to see subdivision neighborhoods with digital phots of each driveway taken from the street level every 100ft. (one could een see if tricycles and bicycles had registration stickers on them.) Who says Big Brother isn't here.

Really? It has been a while. Can you just update it or do you have to uninstall and reinstall?

Maybe - but terrorist should have to work a little harder than reading the Sun - online or not. I guess if a country hasn’t already built their secure underwater bases, they’re out of luck..

I was stationed at Balad Iraq and as a lark I looked up Global Earth and was shocked at the detail that was there in the satallite pix. I found the defac I ate at and even the trailor where I spent my off hours at as well as helicopters on the flight line. No wonder those damned mortars were so accurate.

This is nothing.

Many of our bases are in plain sight.

New London CT where we keep some of our boomer’s is in full view.

Norfolk, has a boomer where you can see the open missile tubes, and the pressure domes covering the missiles among other things such as the USS Enterprise.

The thing is the military isn’t worried about these overheads, because they are months or even sometimes years old and these “high value” targets are not there anymore.

The copyright on these images are a blanket one, and it’s updated every year regardless if the image is refreshed or not.
