Newt Gingrich Eyes 2012 Run

Susan Davis reports on politics.

Newt Gingrich is keeping an eye towards 2012, the former speaker of the House told reporters Thursday evening before a speaking engagement at Randolph Macon College.

Gingrich said he and his wife, Callista, “will look seriously and we’ll probably get our family totally engaged, including our two grandchildren, probably in January 2011, and we’ll look seriously at whether or not we think it’s necessary to do it,” he said, according to the Richmond Times Dispatch.

“And if we think it’s necessary we’ll probably do it. And if it isn’t necessary we probably won’t do it,” he said.

At the Feb. 28 annual Conservative Political Action Conference in Washington, D.C., Gingrich garnered 10% in a straw poll of potential 2012 candidates. Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney won—for the third straight year—with 20%, followed by Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal with 14%, Texas Rep. Ron Paul, and Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin—both of which received 13%.

Proof that narcissism is not the sole province of the Democrats....

“Open primaries next election?”

That’s one I’m torn on. I lived in a state where the Dems closed out everyone but Dems. The R’s had open. They gained many voters for years that way. But this last election...with many Rino’s running didn’t turn out so well with everyone being able to pick the ‘R’ candidate.

Thanks but no thanks, Newt.

This party needs new blood, not recycled candidates.

I won’t vote for Gingrich, and don’t expect him to be the nominee. If he is the nominee, hey, the damage is done, I won’t be voting in 2012. Or at any time thereafter, because, as I said, the damage is done. And I don’t like saying that, but Gingrich has been and would be a disaster, and we don’t need to take credit for the Obama disaster — since the best case scenario would be, Gingrich would win the White House in 2012 and then be cornholed by all his good friends across the aisle in Congress.

Gingrich came up with a great winning strategy in 1994, then squandered its results, and IMO *knew* that he was doing just that. He’s one of those nice third-rail type politicians who will reinforce negative stereotypes against Pubbies and conservatives, and sell both categories down the river in his hunger for power.

He’ll get my vote. He’s more conservative then you think he is. Yes, the Pelosi commercial was a bad idea, but at least he can go toe to toe during debates.

Not my first choice, but not my last either. Newt has one thing that is sorely lacking in this party and it is ideas and intellectual capacity.

Great tactician, but a lot of baggage. I'd vote for him over Romney, McCain, and Huckabee.

Newt Gingrich and Dick Morris belong in the same category.

For all his shortcomings, Newt is an intelligent guy. But if he wants any chance at a political future he needs to come clean on any and all of his mistakes and apologize, then lay out a clear plan for small-government conservative governance. But he’ll probably still not get far.

Is he going to be making any more TV commercials with liberals?

Newt, old man, you were valuable in 1994. But not now. Take some time off and learn fly fishing or how to play the clarinet.

even if he didn’t make any mistakes he is fundamentally unelectable. He’s like Rush: a bit too much in certain areas...
