"Watchmen" Fanatic Derangement Syndrome... (Debbie Schlussel responds to critics)

I guess I shouldn't be amazed at the number of slacker ignoramuses who are up in arms about my frank review cutting down the absolute crap they worship a/k/a "The Watchmen", coming out in theaters late tonight. The e-mails they send me and the comments they make about how "deep," "edgy" and "profound" this vile piece of trash (which is none of these) reminds me of the blind statements of followers of Jim Jones. And we all know what happened after they drank he purple Kool-Aid. If only this movie could achieve that result, it would be the most fantastic exercise in natural selection ever conducted in America.

She was just looking for some attention.

Do you think depicting something fictionally is a defacto endorsement? Macbeth endorses murder, Lolita endorses pederasty and so forth?

I might see the movie.

Except, with three young children, I rarely get to see any movie.

Well, my 15 and 16 year olds aren't going: Rated R for strong graphic violence, sexuality, nudity and language

At least Debbie has the sense to be outraged and angry at the state of our “culture.”

And perhaps, just perhaps, there is a connection between the state of our souls, the state of our culture, and the state of our politics.

Are you offended by the sex and violence in Shakespeare and Greek Tragedy? Or in D.H. Lawrence?

If anyone is a fanatic, it’s this slobbering twit. Too much bleach in her hair dye apparently.

You enjoyed that comment because it’s such a cartoonish self-parody?

“You are absolutely insufferable....

“...I don’t PASS JUDGMENT on people who enjoy different hobbies.

“...you are a pathetic hate-tank...a slimy, pathetic loser who seems to have so little self-esteem that you personally insult those with even the slightest difference of opinion.”

Well.. at least he doesn’t PASS JUDGMENT on people!

Memo to Debbie: take a deep breath, relax. It is just a movie.

Fact: Japanese children regularly encounter depictions of rape, slaughter, mayhem, war, dismemberment, disfigurement, homosexuality, transsexuality, people having sex with aliens, robots, and tentacle monsters, and much worse in their entertainment media. Yet few grow up to practice these things. I wonder why?

16... maybe. 15, no way. Depends on how level headed your kids are.

Err on the side of caution though. Too many idiot parents are going to bring their kids to see this as it is...

My wife and I are planning on seeing it in IMax. Not for the big blue penis, but for the story line. I wouldn't mind seeing Malin Akerman (Silk Specter II) nekkid either... ;-)

I wonder why?

They are dealing with declining birth rates and skyrocketing suicide rates though. Could that be the trade off?

The Japanese are also close to extinction because they are not real-sexual enough to procreate a new generation.

Are you seriously comparing Greek tragedy and Shakespeare to the latest “entertainment” from Hollywood?

Are you really asserting that Watchmen has any artistic or aesthetic merit?

When Oedipus blinds himself after committing years of incest, is the audience titillated? And why didn't Sophocles depict the incest itself? That would have been very titillating indeed.

It's very convenient to lump it all together: One murder in a work of art, say Crime and Punishment, is just the same as a murder in the latest teen sex slayer film.

I gather you actually endorse that view.

It sounds to me as though Watchmen is an orgy of gruesomeness served up to delight those how enjoy carnage for carnage's sake, who enjoy vivid depictions of cruelty and savagery as a kind of light entertainment.

You see nothing morally or culturally corrosive about this.

I beg to differ.

Oh, good grief, don’t pick on the guy because he’s a monarchist. Obama is about as far as from his ideal as you can get.

To compare this to Shakespeare or any classic literature is a BIG stretch.
