INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, FL -- John's Island, a luxurious waterfront community of more than 1300 properties, is taking its "exclusive" reputation to a new level.
Starting February 1st, the John's Island Property Owners' Association launched a new policy requiring anyone who wants to trim hedges, clean houses, or do any kind of business in the neighborhood to "have a valid U.S. Driver's License or ID card."
Workers are now asked to show proof of I.D. at the front gate to the development. They're given a copy of the new policy, written in both English and Spanish, which reads: "If you have an employee that is an illegal alien DO NOT send them to John's Island."
The policy goes on to state that anyone without a U.S. license or I.D. will be "turned away."
Chuck Sereika owns Clean House Services, a housekeeping company that's done business on John's Island for two years. He said he recently had an employee who is a U.S. citizen of Puerto Rican heritage turned away at the gate because he did not have his driver's license with him.
"It's profiling," says Sereika, who says neither he nor any of his caucasian employees have been asked to show I.D.
Peter Young, general manager of the John's Island Property Owners' Association says the policy "wasn't geared toward any particular group or ethnicity." He says it was designed to "strengthen our security."
Karen Merrill, vice president of Elliott Merrill Community Management, represents 85 homeowner's and property owner's associations in Indian River County. She says she's never heard of a policy like this.
She says she doesn't see the relationship between keeping out undocumented workers and improving security. She envisions long tie-ups at the security gates as every worker has to present a valid I.D.
Jerry Burr, direcotr of security at John's Island, says his employees have had to turn workers away at the gate, but he says after a month of the policy, most day-laborers who don't have documentation have stopped coming to the community.
He says John's Island has had no problem finding hundreds of landscapers and other laborers who are willing to do work on property who can present a U.S. driver's license or work visas.

When a couple arrived at the checkpoint in a Ford Focus at 4:30 a.m., the driver told agents that his wife was in labor.
A 32-year-old woman gave birth to a baby boy at a Border Patrol checkpoint in Jamul Wednesday, agents said.
When a couple arrived at the checkpoint in a Ford Focus at 4:30 a.m., the driver told agents that his wife was in labor. Agents called paramedics and provided assistance to the woman in the meantime. The woman gave birth at 4:45 a.m. as paramedics transferred the woman from the car to a gurney. Paramedics transported the woman and the newborn baby to a local hospital.

They should drop the Spanish and simply add, “And must speak English.”
Were they “headed to america for the anchor?”
If they started to arrest any homeowner or business that hired an illegal they would all go home.
“Workers are now asked to show proof of I.D.”
“The policy goes on to state that anyone without a U.S. license or I.D. will be “turned away.”
If only Romney had done that at his sanctuary mansion during those 11 years and two national scandals.
Try this in SoCal and you’d be looking at some tall grass and ratty hedges before long...
I guess this twit has never had to fly or enter a Federal building or military facility recently.
Agreed!
She says she doesn't see the relationship between keeping out undocumented workers and improving security. She envisions long tie-ups at the security gates as every worker has to present a valid I.D.
"Undocumented" is the media's invented term, so . . . If you do not have the correct documents, you may enter!
"Security"? If the workers do not have the proper paperwork, how can the enclave know they are really supposed to be there? How do the people who live there know if the suspicious person is really a worker, or someone who just wants to get in and threaten them?
"long tie-ups at the...gate"? Ha ha ha. 1300 homes. What they show up for all 1300 homes at the same moment? Straw-man argument. Made up.
Dismissed. Bottom line: illegal aliens, keep out. Good for them.
Oh, and Karen Miller doesn't see it? It's about protecting the people who live there. Maybe she needs a new job working for Nancy Pelosi. She can go clean her house and walk her dog.

Saying NO still works!
“If they started to arrest any homeowner or business that hired an illegal they would all go home”
Well dang! Mine can’t go home. After her husband was killed in thier field, she went to work as a police officer in her home state, but was provided minimal training and quit after she was stabbed. Her home state is in political and drug turmoil and safety of her four year Mexican daughter was a key in her trying for a better life in the US, which she has provided, and very well. You’ll never see a more law-abiding person since she can’t risk traffic or other contact with the police. She has property in her home state, but fat lot of good that does her when it’s not safe to go outside, so she’s hoping ‘things change’, and is saving to build a home for her daughter on that land. Hard working, law abiding, tough woman. Mexico can’t have her back.
“requiring anyone who wants to trim hedges, clean houses, or do any kind of business in the neighborhood to “have a valid U.S. Driver’s License or ID card.”
While it’s a start, it probably doesn’t mean a whole lot.
Even here in conservative Texas, illegals can end up getting drivers licenses without much trouble. Now, if you required them to have auto liability insurance...
Give her a prison term and then deport her!
She’s a fellon!
In CA you could do the same thing. If you hire a yard service..tell them you want to see drivers license or state ID for each worker. It is a good practice just for security. These people are possibly casing your house..so identity counts.
If she is so law abiding then how is it that she is living illegally in a foreign country without even a passport or drivers license?
Nobody can cross borders and live illegally without having a streak of criminality in their heart (and some skill at it) and without having to commit crimes and to be willing to keep committing them.
I won’t do work for anyone that hires one, in fact if they have gardners come on the property I check ID and if they can’t prove being legal I quit doing work for the people and tell them i’m calling the Border Patrol and report them for hiring illegals.
Lots of prissy people who are too good to do their own yard work. It's no surprise they are in financial trouble. The are paying illegal aliens to do their yard work while they sit at Starbucks sipping lattes.
You belong in prison with her!
If you feel that strongly, accompany her to INS and sign up as her sponsor. Help her get a green card and/or appropriate visa to work legally. That was the traditional way that immigrants came to this country.
