Why couldn't President Obama have put on more of a show for his British guests? He looked like he simply couldn't be bothered.
Number 10 may be content that they just about got away with the visit to the Oval Office yesterday, as Andrew Porter reports from Washington.
But on this side of the Atlantic the whole business looked pretty demeaning. The morning papers and TV last night featured plenty of comment focused on the White House's very odd and, frankly, exceptionally rude treatment of a British PM. Squeezing in a meeting, denying him a full press conference with flags etc. The British press corps, left outside for an hour in the cold, can take it and their privations are of limited concern to the public.
But Obama's merely warmish words (one of our closest allies, said with little sincerity or passion) left a bitter taste with this Atlanticist. Especially after his team had made Number 10 beg for a mini press conference and then not even offered the PM lunch.
We get the point, sunshine: we're just one of many allies and you want fancy new friends. Well, the next time you need something doing, something which impinges on your national security, then try calling the French, or the Japanese, or best of all the Germans. The French will be able to offer you first rate support from their catering corps but beyond that you'll be on your own.

This is just the first step in dismantling the USA’s oldest and strongest alliance.
It is an important part of destroying the power of the West and increasing the power of the authoritarian East.
yes.
Great idea.
I remember the adjective "balmy" was popular when I was young.
We could call him Balmy Barmy.

B Hussein Obama is busy - he's got a country to ruin!
The POS is rude yo everyone! He is the most arrogant SOB ever to hold the presidency. He has a chip on his shoulder the size of a floor joist; he is ‘hood all the way.
Bingo!
Hey, come on, he’s just a black kid.
I’m not much into politics these days except maybe for nonpolitical politics. That’s more of a consensus on the way in the USA. So you see that things are probably going to get much worse.
He has absolutely NO CLASS, deep down he is a smartass grifter.
The brits have discovered the great diplomat in action.
It will be along dark night for civilization.
Yeah, the same way he inpolitely dumped a national treasure from Britain at the house of the ambassador.
I wonder what the Brits think of Mr World now? Do they recognize the jerk we saw over a year ago?
“Mr Haitch”
I remember that from the A&E series on Hornblower.
I don’t think many of us in Britain will be sorry to see Gordon Brown treated shabbily. The man is radioactive.
Perhaps, but he's still a guest.
Yup, the Europeans seemed to think George Bush was the master of evil thoughts and deeds. So they all rushed to Obama with glee and gushed over him.
The entire world will soon be filled up with remorse over this empty suit of a man. He’s sort of like a guy who sells his soul to the devil, and appears to be everything to every man, but in the end melts away.
Did the Churchill bust get home in one piece?
Brits qualify as the “w” word (that would be “white”) and therefore are not worth the time of day to Barry. I think it’s rather funny that all the white Europeans and Canadians who loved him are finding out exactly how much their adulation meant to him: it’s granny under the bus time again. He’s officially ignored (or at least, come as close as is humanly possible without slamming the door) the Canadians, the Brits, and the King of Spain. He doesn’t need them anymore.
The Kenyans, on the other hand, got royal treatment at the inauguration. Watch for the arrival of his Muslim buds. Pity Britain didn’t send that awful “Lord Ahmed” person; now that would have been a British citizen Barry could have loved!
We’ll see Ahmadinejad and Assad received with a State Dinner of course.
Note to Britain: Maybe next time you'll shut yer gobs when it comes to our elections :)
