WASHINGTON (AP) - Two days after calling Rush Limbaugh a mere "entertainer" with an "incendiary" talk show, Republican National Committee chairman Michael Steele apologized and acknowledged the radio commentator as a "national conservative leader."
"To the extent that my remarks helped the Democrats in Washington to take the focus, even for one minute, off of their irresponsible expansion of government, I truly apologize," Steele said late Monday.
Steele's statement capped a remarkable weekend of awkward sparring between Republican officials and Limbaugh, who has repeatedly voiced his desire that President Barack Obama's economic policies fail.

I don’t listen to Rush on radio.
Incendiary? I have listened to him since ‘93. Incendiary?
Good, that’s done. Now Steele, and every other Republican, needs to ignore any more questions about it, asking the questioner, instead, why the media would be spending time on such a frivilous issue, when our economy is being ruined by That One’s policies.
Obviously, it didn't work, but there are still folks who talk about Rush being addicted to drugs, when that's no longer the case, because they're still trying to denigrate him any way they can. It would not surprise me in the least to see, in a news story about Rush, over the next three weeks, information about that time in his life. It would be done simply to try to tag him with the drug-addict label once more.
Well to be honest SuziQ I do like Steele and I hope the best for him.
You are a little confused. Arlen Spector runs in Republican primaries, not Dem.
You have not been paying attention if you believe that Steele is pro-life. He is pandering to the pro-death Left. He calls conservatives "ugly" and "incendiary". Steele is now clearly a leftist.
You need to decide which side you are on.
You need to brush up on voting tecnic’s.Steele is pro-life.
What a shame. You're missing more than you may realize.
Give him a listen sometime. Start in small doses, and work your way up. When you get up to the full three hours, you'll wonder why you didn't do it sooner, and wish you had.
Mr. Steele, you either believe in the conservative concepts upon which this country was founded - life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness - or you don’t.
And if you do, you do not have a problem with someone like Rush Limbaugh defending those concepts with gusto and without apology.
And you certainly don’t agree with a young talk show moron who labels such a defense as “ugly”.

Most recently, Steele asserted this past weekend that pro-life conservatives are “ugly” and “incendiary.”
Who was it who said, when you're in a hole and want out first stop digging.
Eric, if you want the president to succeed why did you vote against his stimulus package? If the Republican Party is to survive they need to evolve a spine and grow a pair.
Everyone needs to invite Steele to visit their local gun range and loan him their guns and give him some ammo as he tours the country.
Gee Michael Steele got a quick lesson. Kick the big dog and he bites back.
This Republican attempt at cultural diversity is destined to fail.
He has to attack Rush because Rush and other outspoken representatives of the conservative base of the GOP are the only thing standing in Steels way from the GOP being Obamessiah's doormat, a position Steele seems all too ready to assume.
It isn't a schtick, it is reality.
Rush was right, but I wish he had handled it differently, not increasing the public viewing of the deal. I wish he had called Steele and they could have talked about mis-speaking.
2) Unlike some others--I'm assuming at great risk /sarc that you are one of them--I like Romney and he is giving money to Conservative candidates (proven to be fact).
3) Last I looked, this is still a free Country (give B.O. time, I know) and I can do what I wish.
We Conservatives are "don't make waves, do the right thing, and just get along" type people. We know right from wrong and live it rather than preach it to others. THIS HAS TO STOP.
RUSH, through his calling Steele on the carpet for making a huge mistake," is giving us permission to do so--again, we learn through example. This is a perfect example of no more business as usual with Dems or those that do not act in the best interest of this Country:
DO NOT JUST ACCEPT AND DEAL - TELL THE TRUTH - SPEAK SUCCINCTLY - USE ONLY FACTS - NEVER GIVE UP -and- DON'T BACK DOWN!
Yes, you may not care to HEAR THE TRUTH, BUT RUSH IS ONE OF THE FEW WITH ENOUGH COURAGE TO SPEAK IT.
