During his visit to Mohave County last week, Arizona Sen. John McCain sat down with the Kingman Daily Miner Editorial Board to discuss a number of issues. The senator answered questions about the economic stimulus package, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, education and other issues. The following is Part II of the discussion the board had with the senator on Feb. 19.
MINER: My parents live down in Yuma. One of the things they're most worried about is illegal immigration. My dad is fired up by the fact that that became a non-issue when you guys were running for president, at least the last six months of it. And he basically just wants to know, is there going to be something from the federal level to stop this?
MCCAIN: I don't know because the president leads. It was President Bush and me and Ted Kennedy who came up with the last proposal, which failed twice. So, President Obama is going to have to lead on this issue.
I think we still need to have comprehensive immigration reform. I think we ought to assure people that our borders are secure. I also try to remind people that 40 percent of the people who are in this country illegally come on a visa that's legal and it's expired...
. . . . .
I say the answer to the problem is comprehensive immigration reform, which as you know is, secure the border, a temporary worker program and a path to citizenship for people. Put 'em in line behind everyone who has come here legally or left legally, make them pay fines, learn English, etc., etc. But there's not 12 million pairs of handcuffs in America to deport them all.

The interview also includes McCain's thoughts on Sheriff Joe and the border fence, among other items.

.
May I suggest zip cuffs?
His post election conduct on Palin was the last straw.
Take a hike Johnno. You are a geriatric piker with delusions of grandeur and disloyalty to conservative America.
Hey McCain! You are the legislative branch of the government. You make the laws, not Obama! Do your frikin' job RINO-Boy!
SHUT UP and SET DOWN, LOSER!
McCain you lost. Now disappear. Oh! and thanks for showing us Sarah, Our next President.
McCain, is it to hard for you to answer a straightforward question?
If not; get your sorry butt out of office.
“...But there’s not 12 million pairs of handcuffs in America to deport them all” = straw man argument.
I wish he’d just shut up!
BTW, John, what happen to the left over campaign funds?
Dems= the party of immorality and the killing of innocent babies and socialist liberal entitlement to rape the taxpayers.
The Republicans = the party of Democrat lite and one little lady from Alaska with more cajones than the rest of the pathetic party leaders combined.
They're ruining our country. Amnesty for illegals and political correctness will be our undoing.
2050 Welcome to Norte Mexico (If the muzzies don't get us first)
Wake up people!
McCain is stuck on stupid. From the interview:
All I can say as a Republican, a proud Republican, party of Abraham Lincoln, we are losing the Hispanic vote because Hispanics believe that Republicans don't like them. George Bush in 2000 and 2004 got 43 percent of the Hispanic vote. I got 31 percent Hispanic vote. I'm not talking about illegal immigrants. I'm talking about people who are citizens that vote. We Republicans had better understand that the party of Abraham Lincoln is an inclusive party, not an exclusive party. That means reaching out to the Hispanic community, recruiting and electing Hispanics to upper offices.
Idiot.
I suspect there are well over a million illegals in Michigan alone.
THe Hispanic Community is either largely illegal, or based on recent illegal immigration. What McLame really means is that w1ee ought to compete with the Democrats for illegal votes.
I always refer to there being between 20 and 35 million illegals here. We had around ten million when Bush came to office. If the flow remained the same from 2000, then it would stand to reason we would be close to 20 million now. The problem with that is that around 2003 to 2005, illegal immigration exploded. Time magazine referred to 3.5 million illegals coming across the border every year in that time frame. I don’t believe it was that high, but it was high enough, 1.5 to 2.5 million per year.
Then there’s the issue of the children born to these illegal immigrants. That alone could count for five million more people.
Then there’s the visa overstays. I’m be damned if McCain isn’t saying, “Well, since there’s are so many that overstay their visa, it’s not fair to crack down on illegal immigrants.” What a pinhead argument that is.
That’s the same as saying, well there are burglaries, so we shouldn’t prosecute car thieves.
About the only signs that should be carried outside a McCain event is...
STFU MCCAIN
YOU DON’T
SPEAK FOR ME!
It’s interesting that Juan stayed noncommittal on Sheriff Joe.
It is a sad state of affairs when the republican candidate for president doesn't know that the Republican McCain party is open to, and actively invites participation by all Americans without regard of superficial differences.
For those who believe in the politics of racial identity and the pitting one group against another on the basis of race, skin color, religion or sex there is always the democrat party, which is where McCain rightfully belongs.
