[Senator Chris] Dodd, [Rep. Rosa] DeLauro Introduce National Service Bills
The Hartford Courant ^ | February 24, 2009 | Jesse A. Hamilton

Posted on 02/25/2009 9:33:21 PM PST by 2ndDivisionVet

Sen. Chris Dodd and Rep. Rosa DeLauro got together today to introduce four public-service bills in their respective chambers of Congress.

National service was a major theme of President Barack Obama's ascent to office -- mentioned prominently in his inaugural address. This package of bills speaks directly to that topic, expanding service possibilities for all age groups.

One bill would establish a summer program for kids to serve in an organized community project. Another would allow high-school students to spend a semester getting academic credit for volunteering. And a third would establish a national program encouraging people 55 and older to pitch in.

The fourth bill in their "Service for All Ages" initiative would expand the existing AmeriCorps education benefit to make up for 15 years of unmatched college tuition hikes.

Three community volunteers from Connecticut -- Mozelle Vann of Hamden, Latoya Braham of Farmington and Luz Burgos of Middletown -- came to the Capitol Hill announcement to drive the point home.

Dodd's senate bills are co-sponsored by Sen. Thad Cochran, R-Miss., making it a bipartisan effort in that chamber. Cochran said in a statement today, "The bills that Sen. Dodd and I have introduced in the Senate today will help provide opportunities for people of all ages to give back to their communities and the world around them."

More and more we are becoming more like our cold war adversaries in that these countries forced their people to do labor for the good of the State—such as harvesting wheat, rice, or sugar cane, or working in community clinics for 1 or 2 months at a time if they had medical skills...

Thanks to the Marxist thugs in the White House...But let these MarxRATS take it to the extreme—maybe then the American public will wake up and say enough !...

When the San Diego City schools tried to force high school students to perform "volunteer work" to graduate, my son took them to task. He appeared on both Rick Roberts and Roger Hedgecock's shows to argue that this was involuntary servitude and prohibited by the 13th Amendment. He made his case. The school district backed down.

Good for him!

Back in H.S. we had to donate some time to graduate as well. I got out of it by "doubling-up" on some of the "volunteer time" the Judge had me do that year :)

Your son's way is much more admirable!

Best post of week :)
Seriously tho, how can students doing so poorly in academics (as the kenyan pointed out at the faux State of Union Speech), take a semester off of the 3Rs to volunteer?!

This country is headed for totalitarian rule at breakneck speed. When I think about the idiots who voted for this guy I want to throw up.

They want change? OK! A mandatory examination on curent affairs is a start. Most of the morons who voted for Obama are too ignorant to be allowed to vote. Of course those are the folks politicians want to be voting.

I was. When I was his age, I went after the school district with respect to the definition of a "senior" at the high school. I convinced the district to define class standing by the number of classes completed rather than the number of semesters attended. The result was that 65 members of my graduating class had senior privileges as we finished high school in 2 years instead of 3.

In junior high, I went after the district to get condiments (ketchup, mustard, mayo) available to students purchasing the awful oatmeal laced burgers sold by the cafeteria. Yet another win.

I encouraged my son to pursue the issue. The effort and accomplishment was his own work.

Or if you are 55+ and don’t do this crap then if you get sick no health care for you..
This has got to stop and where are the damn Repblicans? going along with much of this stuff just to get the bucks for their states.
I forsee the day coming when the ordinary American is going to tell this bunch to go to hell..and there will be a stampede on Washignton..a sort of American Revolution of some sort. How it would be I dont know but seems that what is clear is that we have taxation with no represnentation..this country has become a monarchy or dictatorship and the sheeple don’t see it yet.

13th Amendment:

Section 1. Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime where of the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.

Section 2. Congress shall have the power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation.

Gee, all I ever did was wear strings tied around my flip flops because the admin said we couldn’t wear flip flops due to safety concerns, (1972).
