Sen. Chris Dodd and Rep. Rosa DeLauro got together today to introduce four public-service bills in their respective chambers of Congress.
National service was a major theme of President Barack Obama's ascent to office -- mentioned prominently in his inaugural address. This package of bills speaks directly to that topic, expanding service possibilities for all age groups.
One bill would establish a summer program for kids to serve in an organized community project. Another would allow high-school students to spend a semester getting academic credit for volunteering. And a third would establish a national program encouraging people 55 and older to pitch in.
The fourth bill in their "Service for All Ages" initiative would expand the existing AmeriCorps education benefit to make up for 15 years of unmatched college tuition hikes.
Three community volunteers from Connecticut -- Mozelle Vann of Hamden, Latoya Braham of Farmington and Luz Burgos of Middletown -- came to the Capitol Hill announcement to drive the point home.
Dodd's senate bills are co-sponsored by Sen. Thad Cochran, R-Miss., making it a bipartisan effort in that chamber. Cochran said in a statement today, "The bills that Sen. Dodd and I have introduced in the Senate today will help provide opportunities for people of all ages to give back to their communities and the world around them."

And, about that HIGH SCHOOL volunteer work....I have a step granddaughter who had to have volunteer work credits....so she babysat for family friends....it's a SCAM....and it's NOT VOLUNTEER!!! It's forced.

I imagine these goofs will be sent out to “register” DemocRATS to “vote” and then sent door to door telling people to “vote” for the ‘RATS during the elections cycles.

Is Cochran crazy? This is Obama’s “Hitler Youth” plan.
Some schools now require a certain amount of volunteer hours in community service to graduate with “honors”... and the National Honor Society has required it for some time now (don’t know if it is a local or National thing).
Before these jack-booted thugs start passing these bills on “national service”, maybe they should actually take a stab at actually giving SERVICE to their constituents and this country.
