CHER RIPS NUNS IN NEW SONG, "SISTERS OF MERCY" [Why Are Catholics Silent?]

CHER RIPS NUNS IN NEW SONG, "SISTERS OF MERCY"

A week prior to the release of Cher’s new CD, "Not Commercial," she was blasted all over the country by the Catholic League for her anti-Catholic song, "Sisters of Mercy." The

Cher described the songs on her new CD, all of which she wrote, as "dark." Indeed, she authorized a warning label on the cover because of the subject matter and colorful language. The CD was released on November 8 and the league struck on November 1.

The song that caught the attention of the Catholic League was "Sisters of Mercy." Allegedly written on the basis of tales told to Cher by her mother (Cher spent a brief time in a Catholic orphanage as an infant), the song attacks the Catholic order of nuns from beginning to end. The Sisters are called "daughters of hell"; "master of pain"; "mothers of shame"; "twisters of truth"; and "daughters of war."

Other lines in the song that refer to the Sisters of Mercy are as follows: "They always weave their web of lies and wrap you in their wicked spell"; "They try to crucify your inner sense and do it in God’s name"; "They use God like he’s a weapon but only for a chosen few, then hide behind pious faces like the guilty always do"; "These chicks administer your penance while the devil guards their door," etc.

Old sluts never die, they write controversial songs to remind people they’re not dead

Since I don’t pay any attention to Cher, I have no idea what her latest songs are. I suspect I’m not alone, so I can understand why Catholics are silent. Frankly I don’t think we ought to give her any publicity about the stupid song.

Leonard Cohen is a brilliant poet and songwriter. My hubby loves his song, “Suzanne”.

You have to admire Cher's courage in attacking a risque target like the Catholic Church, Darkwolf. Their decapitation cleavers are being sharpened as we speak!

It's embarrassing, isn't it? A woman at her age trying to be like someone FIFTY yes FIFTY years younger, i.e. a teenager.

What baffles me is that even the supposedly most hip STILL think it's somehow dangerous to attack nuns.

Come out attacking Al Qaeda, Muslims who burn women or chop off their heads, or illegals who steal public money from American needy, Cher, and you might actually get some recognition for being cutting-edge. But...NUNS? Wow, you beat up on women your own age who don't have access to the benefits of silicone, that's so ghetto, so rock 'n' roll.

Someone take this fool's pen away, clearly she shouldn't be allowed to write lyrics.

Because Cher is irrelevant and seems to have lost whatever talent she may have once possessed. Gone, it seems, along with her original nose, eyes, and voice.

Thus, Cher is unworthy of comment to the point that, if there is controversy over a CD of hers that came out in November, I'm forced to ask if it isn't terribly self-serving on some level. Not yours, of course.

HTH

I totally agree with your post.

I guess the infomercial gig is up for Cher so she is back to her little better than Yoko Ono as a musician/writer career?

Why are catholics silent?
Cause catholics have lost whatever moral authority they ever held.
1st you have the buggering of little boys for decades while the church looks the other way and then shifts the perps around to avoid the law.
Then you have how many elected officials who take a pro abortion stand and still the church looks the other way. Wouldn’t want to lessen those orrerings now would ya.

I went to a Catholic Elementary School from K to Grade 8. All of the teachers were Sisters of Mercy. I got a good education. I did have one negative experience on the last day of school before I graduated and to this day do not really understand it.

I was called into the coat room by my teacher, a Sister of Mercy, and asked if during my 9 years of schooling, had I ever been hit by any of my teachers. When I said no, she slapped me on the head. It hurt because she hit me with her hand that had this big old ring on it.

She then said to me that every child should be hit at least once during their elementary school days. Still do not understand.

If we have any Catholic Freepers, I sure would appreciate your input.

I’m an honest realist,
Not a pie in the sky kinda sweetheart.
Catholic Cult is full of piety misplaced.

Since the band hasn’t put out an album in a freaking *decade*, who’s really listening to anything Eldritch has to say?

They’re now just a “touring band” and as much as it pains me to say it, they have gone the way of my beloved BOC.

Rehashing old hits to new listeners and die-hard old fans...and little more.

But I’ll still go see BOC at every country fair, festival, irrelevant venue and roadhouse within 200 miles of here and happily listen to the same ol’ same ol’, just because....:)

Didja know that Don Roeser [aka Buck Dharma] is a die hard Republican?

Eldritch may be politically stupid but he’s got a great sound.

The thematic juxtaposition of Pete/Rasputin is inspired.

You probably don’t appreciate Maya Angelou’s lyrical brilliance either, Darkwolf. You’re a hopeless cause. lol Bob

Maya Angelou’s lyrical brilliance

I've heard water going down a drain that sounded more eloquent.
