Anthem is a dystopic science fiction story taking place at some unspecified future date. Mankind has entered another dark age as a result of what Rand saw as the weaknesses of socialistic thinking and economics. Technological advancement is now carefully planned (when it is allowed to occur, if at all) and the concept of individuality has been eliminated (for example, the word I has disappeared from the language). As is common in her work, Rand draws a clear distinction between the socialist/communal values of equality and brotherhood and the productive/capitalist values of achievement and individuality. The story also parallels Stalinist Russia, which was currently going on at the time as the story was published.
I know there are Ayn Rand fans on this site and since this was available for FREE, I thought to pass it along.
Remember read a book a week. It makes you smarter than the enemy.
I’m just reading “1984” for the first time. In light of how things are now, VERY scary.
Her shorter novels were her better books, I've always thought.
Since this book is out of copyright since 1966.
It is a good start to fight the collectivism that is now investing obamanomics.
Individual is a four letter word in the age of obamanomics.
Anthem ... Aside from a preposterous story line, the book is notable primarily for the absolute worst last line in the history of writing....
Make sure you read Huxley's Brave New World. Also very scary and then of course you MUST read Rand's Atlas Shrugged too.
why do you say that? it makes total sense if you understand Rand’s position on individuality and reason AND you know latin. (and what THAT word translates to)
Remember read a book a week? from Ayn Rand? Are you kidding?................
I already have a paperback copy of this, purchased shortly after Bambi was elected. A little difficult to read, but not bad.
BTW, Rush’s “2112” is loosely based on the plot of Anthem.
we need a freerepublic sticky links to free versions of must read books and hyperlinks to modern must reads.
"We are nothing. Mankind is all. By the grace of our brothers are we allowed our lives. We exist through, by and for our brothers who are the State. Amen."
Free to Choose/Milton Friedman. Road to Serfdom/F. A. Hayek.
It's still the stupidest last line in the history of writing.
any book, just read.
Victor David Hansen
T. Rosevelt biographies
books loved by the founding fathers
books about the WW II
books about ecconomics
JUST READ.
(if you just limited yourself to Rand, you would need a obama stimulus reading program...and you don’t want his must read list)
Some of her paragraphs in "Atlas Shrugged" were the equivalent of short books. IIRC, she obsessed about some relatively small sections and took months to write them. As much as I admire her work (more so today), she was a weird one.
(s)you are not allowed to have a individual opionion. We must all accept the view of dear leader. We are borg of obama...(/s)
seriously, the rest of the book still holds true given the collectivist nighmare being pushed by CNN, Pelosi, and the effetes of PMSNBC. Knowledge is the only true power and the left wants you to not think. Just think the left convinced Olympia snowe to be stupid and it worked wonders for them.
Reading Atlas Shrugged right now, about a quarter through the book.
Amazing what one can learn from reading Rand and Orwell.
(s) you read a physical book! GASP!!! the ink has lead poisoning!!! did you not hear the warnign from the new administration? books are hazardous waste. (/s)
