Barack Obama has sent Sir Winston Churchill packing and pulse rates soaring among anxious British diplomats.
A bust of the former prime minister once voted the greatest Briton in history, which was loaned to George W Bush from the Government's art collection after the September 11 attacks, has now been formally handed back.
The bronze by Sir Jacob Epstein, worth hundreds of thousands of pounds if it were ever sold on the open market, enjoyed pride of place in the Oval Office during President Bush's tenure.
But when British officials offered to let Mr Obama to hang onto the bust for a further four years, the White House said: "Thanks, but no thanks."

What gripe does Obama have against Winston Churchill? I’m sure it’s not that Churchill was allied with Josef Stalin in WWII. Could his problem be that the sculptor of the Churchill bust (Epstein) was Jewish?
Perhaps he read Chruchill's The River War (1899)

Thanks for the post. Wow, I didn’t realize that Churchill wrote something that negative about “Mohammedanism” (which, BTW, was the most acceptable English word to describe that religion until the latter part of the 20th century). That passage would certainly make life for Churchill very difficult if he were contending for high public office in today’s Britain.
Sir Winston sure knew his customer. He well understood the grave danger Islam posed to Western civilization. Alas, the wisdom he possessed was/is exceedingly rare.
The River War
Only in his twenties when he pestered his way into the campaign which was the re-conquest of the Sudan. Lord Kitchener did not want him there. His mother pulled a few strings (laughs). This you will know of course. Of interest to others is that twenty thousand fanatical horsemen charged for Allah and Islam. The British were waiting.
It may be the last great head to head battle between them and Western forces. Even Churchill was dismayed at the complete and utter slaughter of the Dervish forces. This at Omdurman just outside Khartoum.
They (fanatics) have not got the guts to face an enemy in the field any longer. Which makes them more dangerous.
