These talk shows are one of the primary methods for publicizing movies. His "performance" may have been detrimental to the studio and anyone who has a financial interest in the movie. Also the two lead actresses have a stake in the success of the movie as do the director and producers.
Nice of him to show up and be an ass and tell all of them to buzz off.

The Unabomber line almost made him break character. He ‘got’ that Letterman joke and almost laughed. I agree with you. PR Stunt.

Joaquin had a clef lip/palette— perhaps he has a bridge and didn’t put it in for the show— who knows. It’s sad if he’s on drugs— it’s so common for people who lose a family member who’s on drugs to start doing drugs themselves in order to get close to them in some weird way.
He ruled as Johnny Cash. Compare that to the abysmal lip-synching performance of Johnathan Rhys-Meyers as Elvis. Of course it was smart to use Elvis’ real masters, but Rhys-Meyers DID NOT look like he was singing it at all.

He may be bizarro, but hes a darn good actor.IIRC, his entire family is a bunch of "whack-a-doos," but you're right he is a good actor, as was his late brother, River Phoenix. The family were members of some sort of commune that had ties to some sort of cult allegations.

I am no expert, but I didn't think that meth was classed as a downer. Everything he exhibited was indicative of 1 of 2 things: either a tremendous bit of acting in character or copious amounts of some kind of downer.

Step 1: Act like a freak / do something outrageous in public.
Step.2: Watch as the media creates a buzz about it.
Step 3: Use notoriety to make millions.
Welcome to fame in 21st Century America. No talent required.
