The Vatican gave the Creationist lobby a left right sign of the cross today, announcing it would stage a conference on Darwinism next month and declaring that it was one of the Fathers of the Church that thought up the idea in the first place.
At one point the conference at the Pontifical Gregorian University wasn't going to give Creationism or Intelligent Design a hearing at all. But apparently the organisers have relented, and will consider Intelligent Design as a "cultural phenomenon" rather than as a valid scientific theory, giving US-based IDers the chance to be smirked at by a room full of Monseigneurs, Cardinals and Bishops.
Previewing the conference yesterday, Archbishop Gianfranco Ravasi, head of the Church's Pontifical Council for Culture, conceded the Church had been hostile to Darwin on occasion. But, he said, the Church had never formally condemned Darwin, and he noted that in the last 50 years a number of Popes had accepted evolution as a valid scientific approach to human development.

But I thought all evolutionists are atheists!
This article certainly and erroneously conflates so many things to support its faulty premises and faulty conclusions.
The Church does not deign to place restrictions upon the Lord God Almighty, Creator of Heaven and Earth; if evolution has occurred, the Church herself absolutely maintains that it was the Intelligent Designer Himself that made it so, and that God deliberately imparts a soul to each human person at the time of their individual creation in the flesh.
It is this view of “intelligent design” that is most absolutely a doctrine that all Christians who recite the Apostles Creed must beleive.
Intelligent design cannot be proven by science. However, the weakness of science can make the doctrine of intelligent design much easier to support as a rational explanation of Creation. And Darwinism is quite weak as having a basis in sicentific evidence, though some of its ideas seem very plausible until religiously zealous Darwinists try to make sweeping claims with a paucity of evidence.
The Vatican conference will be one of the very few places where religious people can actually discuss these very important distinctions and ensure the debate and discussion are based on REASON, and not on the unfounded claims of zealous members of the church of Darwin.
LOL! Like God needs the Catholic church’s blessing!
These folks need a Bible.
The Creation story in Genesis is God's unfolding story of His love for man, NOT a literal history of how we got here. It was written down so that we might see that Creation, and all that is in it, was for our benefit, but in our hubris, we lost the Garden, and have been, for all these centuries, trying to get back to that time when we were one with God.
What are you talking about? I just saw a manbearpig walk down my street, holding hands with a half-man/half-ape creature!
/s
And we'll see it all on FR.
Hey ... Anybody wanna know why we have a Pres(id)ent named 0bama? Because a huge segment of FR consists of ignorant, gullible dolts ... and FReepers (on average) are 'way smarter than Americans in general (on average).
Let’s face it, some people just don’t think faith can coexist with reason. And sometimes it is difficult to reconcile the two. I think it is to the credit of the RC Church that it insists on confronting this problem.
You saw Algore and El Presidente?
I would say that is as it should be. My understanding is, however, that the science taught in Catholic schools is the same science taught in public schools. If the church wants to add its view that there are things that science can't address, I have no problem.
” Like God needs the Catholic churchs blessing.”
Are you saying that someone, anyone, suggested THAT?
“These folks need a Bible.”
You mean the RC Church fathers? Or the people who think that reason and the scientific method have merit?
No the dummy mantra is that all creationists are idiots. Everyone knows that most people are evolutionists by default.
Funny. Jesus thought it was.
Guess He had it wrong, eh?
“The Creation story in Genesis is God’s unfolding story of His love for man, NOT a literal history of how we got here.”
Boy are you in trouble now.
What a bunch of propoganda drivel this article is, clearly written by a hack with absolutely no intellect or theological understanding.
THe POPE stated long ago that evolution is not in conflict with the faith, in fact Change is one of the most visible signs of God’s existence (First Mover Theory).
I don’t who this article is by, or what agenda they have, but its clearly written by a rather ignorant bloke.
I've been known to miss a few things in the Scriptures, but I've never seen a place where Jesus says anything *close* to "Hey, that Genesis story is the literal story of the creation of Earth."
Care to show me where I'm wrong?
Yes, pointing out that nearly 4 millenia of Theologians grasped the Bible to have stories of alagory and not to be read 100% literally at all times, like a few fools in the last few hundred years have declared it to be will get you flamed big time by those heretical followers of those branches of the last couple hundred years.
Who wrote the Genesis story on tablets of stone?
Here's the actual title on Zenit:
Darwin Event Aims to Heal Faith, Science Rift
A snippet from that article:
**"It's not in the least about a celebration in honor of the English scientist; it's simply about analyzing an event that marked for all time the history of science and that has influenced the way of understanding our very humanity," said Jesuit professor Marc Leclerc at the presentation.**
So you see, there is nothing about the Vatican endorsing Darwin in the article.
Moses. Unless you're trying to say that Jesus wrote the Old Testament. At which point, I'd have to ask for some sort of source on that.
