Just got off the phone with an influential Republican senator. I asked how things stood with the stimulus, and he answered instantly, "They've cut a deal with three of our guys. They're delaying us from offering amendments. I suspect that as soon as they've got it written, they will offer it as an amendment, vote on it, and that will be it." He didn't have details on what the deal might be, but most Republicans seem to suspect it will involve relatively small cuts and very little change in the price tag of the bill from the House version that will be touted as a major bipartisan compromise. My senator suspects hopes? that no more than four Republicans will vote for the bill.

Denial is one of the steps of grieving. It's not a pretty process, best done in private.
It doesn't matter. The final amendment will be in the form of a substitute for the entire bill on the floor, wiping out the original bill and all amendmenmts passed up to that point.
for what it’s worth I wrote my 2 Dem Senators
Of the two women from Maine, Collins is the least likely to vote for the stimulus package and thus needs calls like yesterday.
Don’t forget Voinivich who can NEVER be counted on to vote with Republicans.
Specter for sure!
Pick up the phone, FRiend!!
That will happen soon enough. If you know what you said. And the timeframe Crosby, Stills and Nash came out with that song.
So far, Obama has pissed off about 10 countries and got about twice that scared as hell.
But is 3 or 4 enough to give Obama the cover he needs??
Agree. I got an email from McCain saying he does NOT support the bill. But, of course, he may cave.
Not even close to being enough cover. The ones voting are the liberal Republicans so IMHO there is no cover for ZERO.
When you get Lindsey Graham and John McCain saying this bill is full of pork and a bad bill, then we have all the Fiscal Conservatives on board which is the vast majority of what is left of Republicans in the Senate.
Should be interesting. I have the Senate telecast on mute as Dodd speaks with his forked tongue.
Its worth everything...thank you.
I called Spector’s Harrisburg office this AM. Been trying the DC office since 9AM. Just got through. Asked how he was voting and got a speech about amendments. Told them that I didn’t care how many strings of pearls they put on this pig, if Specter votes for this bill I will personally campaign against him and I haven’t campaigned for anyone in 30 years.
I have got to find and bookmark that study posted here at FR that showed that social conservatives mostly showed up and voted for McCain, it was fiscal conservatives who stayed home (I suppose his support for the first Great American Taxpayers Heist did him in with them).
My two Senate offices are saying that McCain is fully on board with NO and has petitions going from his PAC that say NO to the current package with all the pork. McCain has never liked pork in bills so this would be one he would easily vote against. The key to me is Lindsey Graham with his take on the bill on the floor of the Senate — spoke volumes and was why I used to really like him.
Uh, good point!
Me too!
Thanks for the great links!
A Haitian necklace?
It makes fine political sense to stand against a bill thats as plainly unpopular as this one is.
There's no excuse for any republican to support it.
