According to the grandmother of octuplets born in California last week, rather than allow her leftover frozen embryos to be destroyed, dissected in a laboratory, or frozen indefinitely, their mother chose to give them a chance at life by implanting them in her womb.
Little did she expect to give birth to eight relatively healthy babies, or to be deluged first by congratulations, then by scorn, as critics questioned her choice not to selectively abort as a single mother of reportedly little means.
Suleman, anonymous at the time, made headlines last Monday when she gave birth to the longest-living set of octuplets on record at Kaiser Permanente Hospital in West Los Angeles. The babies, six boys and two girls, are reported to continue growing in strength. "My family and I are ecstatic about all of their arrivals," said the mother in a statement following the births. The octuplets' grandmother described the babies as "so tiny and so beautiful."
Later it was revealed that Suleman, who is divorced and according to her mother unable to have children naturally, had already had six children via previous fertility treatments. Media attention turned sour as headlines changed to challenge the ethics of the situation.
"Suleman's story transformed from a dream to a nightmare," wrote a New York Daily News columnist. The story was called a "freak show," "a tawdry nightmare," and "a seedy story of self-indulgence." Some accused Suleman of giving bith as a means to fame and wealth. "If you want to find a way to be famous and to be, in your mind, a celebrity, there's lots of ways to go about it," says Cooper Lawrence, author of "The Cult of Celebrity." "If you're not a good singer and you can't write books," said Lawrence, "go have babies."

And now she’s got two publicists and is fishing around for media and book deals.
sorry but this woman is psycho and the doctors that did this knowing that she already had 6 kids with out a father should have their med license revoked.
Where did she get the money for all of this? I know it sure isn’t cheap.
Got a mirror?
“According to the grandmother of octuplets born in California last week, rather than allow her leftover frozen embryos to be destroyed, dissected in a laboratory, or frozen indefinitely, their mother chose to give them a chance at life by implanting them in her womb.”
Are those violins I’m hearing?
Let’s see..already the mother of 6, no husband...sure why not implant another 8? Someone should go to a mental institution after a sterization procedure, someone should lose their medical license and both even face jail for perpetrating such a crime on society.
‘Got a mirror?’
I had to think about this for thirty seconds...you gotta be kidding me, right?
Tax money?
I’m sure LSN is ready to pay for these children. Right?
Once pregnant, she should not have aborted.
She already had six kids. She shouldn’t have been able to find a clinic that would impregnate her.
I fault her. I also fault the people who made this possible for her.
This type of procedure is voluntary and costs lots of money...I don’t think there’s any way it could have come out of taxpayers pockets. I’ll bet now that they are born we are paying billions for their care...but SOME ONE paid for these procedures.
You and I are in part the sugar daddies for this woman.
We may not like it, but that’s the sad fact.
From a mercenary standpoint, she could have probably sold the embryos to infertile couples, thereby ensuring they would be full term and presumably healthy babies and making some money so she could support herself.
I’ve got a lot of problems with the title to this article. Not aborting? People are “angry” that she had them implanted in the first place. There’s no “aborting” to it. The doctor should pay her child support.
No different than any other woman I run across...(chuckle)
She had 6 kids, including a pair of 2 year old twins ?
Did she have the 8 embryos created after the 6 were already born?
If so, then you’re right, this is WRONG.
However, if the embryos already existed, or were part of the original “batch” that created the 6, this was the right thing to do, give them life.
The thought crossed your mind, didn't it, that you were the "donor"?
I have mixed feelings about this. On the one hand, in vitro fertilization is very questionable. And she has to be a whacko to have this many babies, unmarried and without money, and then expect to sell her story to the highest bidder.
On the other hand, better to give the kids life than kill them, as these “angry” folks think she should have done. Of course the whole question would have been avoided if she hadn’t been messing around with in vitro fertilization in the first place.
In one of the stories I've read on this, she apparently told her mother that she was getting PAID to do this. Maybe that was to get her mother off her back, I don't know. Maybe she was thinking of the tremendous payday she'd receive from the PR for this. Apparently she was right; look at all the networks chasing her for her story.
My hubby, SirKit was amused when I was reading some of the outrage from the medical folks for her not having 'reduced' the pregnancy by aborting several of the kids. He laughed because it is folks like that who created the problem. Those folks tend to be pro-choice, so why are they so angry about the decision she made, after all, THEY made it possible for her to make this choice.
