Hartford Mayor Eddie A. Perez, a Democrat Party member in his third term, has been arrested for bribery, falsifying evidence and conspiring to falsify evidence charges stemming from allegedly underpaying a local contractor for home renovations.
The contractor, Carlos Costa, was not paid for nearly two years by Mayor Perez and thought he “would be blackballed as a contractor in the city” if he did not do the renovations free, prosecutors said.
When confronted by investigators for not paying Costa, Democrat Mayor Perez said he was distracted by his wife’s illness. Investigators say Perez lied in 2007 Perez when he said he had paid Costa for $20,000 for the work and could give them the canceled check. Perez allegedly applied to the Hartford Federal Credit Union for a loan that afternoon.
Persecutors say Costa, who was paid $20,000 for $40,000 worth of work on Democrat Mayor Perez’s two-story colonial house in Hartford that included kitchen counters, a whirlpool, and a remodeled bathroom with a steam sauna, has done millions of dollars of work for Perez on city contracts approved by Mayor Perez. Costa was also arrested by invesigators.

Prosecutors said that the renovations were worth around $40,000 but that the mayor paid the contractor, Carlos Costa, just over $20,000 — and did so in 2007, about two years after they were done and just as prosecutors were beginning their inquiry. Mr. Perez also requested and received fraudulent billing statements for the work, according to the charges against him.

A sober-faced Mr. Perez, 51, a Democrat who is in his third term as mayor, surrendered early Tuesday after being charged with three counts of bribery, conspiracy and falsifying evidence, following a 15-month investigation. He was freed without bail.

Well, well, another Democrat in trouble with the law. We heard earlier today that the Mayor of Baltimore had been indicted for stealing from a program to provide food for the poor. Then there is the mayor of Portland, Oregon, who has admitted to having a homosexual affair with an underage male intern. Charles Rangel still hasn’t paid his back taxes. I think that we should start a list of Democrats with legal problems.
