Sen. Judd Gregg Eyed For Commerce Secretary Gregg Played Key Role In Bank Bailout POSTED: 7:21 pm EST January 29, 2009 UPDATED: 10:48 am EST January 30, 2009

WASHINGTON -- President Barack Obama is considering nominating Republican U.S. Sen. Judd Gregg of New Hampshire as his commerce secretary.

Gregg, the ranking member of the Senate Budget Committee, worked as the leading Republican negotiator on the bank bailout plan last year.

In a written statement, Gregg said that he's aware his name is among those being considered and it's an honor to be considered. He wouldn't comment further on the possible appointment.

Gregg was re-elected to his third term in November 2004. If he is appointed to head the department, his Senate seat would be filled by Democratic Gov. John Lynch.

New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson had previously been nominated to lead the Commerce Department but withdrew his name earlier this month because of an ongoing investigation in his home state.

Taking the offer is political treason, given a Democrat will replace him.

The only thing Gregg has going for him is he is less anti-gun than Obama.

He is a memeber of the pro-abort “Republicans for Choice”.

RINO

Man, McCain isn't going to like this. He'll loose his grip on the Republicans collective testicle hairs again.

Yep, the primary reason to give the seat to him is to replace him with a ‘Rat.

Which is the reason Obama names him. Mebee the Bamster's afraid Stuart Smalley won't steal it, after all.

It is not all that unusual for a Senator to be appointed to a cabinet post and be replaced as Senator by a person of the other party.

However, this case would have a strange dynamic in that the Senator being appointed is not of the same party as the President.

Pure genius for Democrats.

Not good for the Republicans.

And with a Democrat in the Governor’s office in New Hampshire, he will appoint ad democrat to the senate. Now only one shot away from the filibuster proof majority. What the hell are the republican’s thinking about.

Actually there is a deal being floated by Obama to have the Dem governor of NH replace Gregg with a very weak GOP caretaker Senator who would NOT run for re-election in 2010 thus guaranteeing a Dem in that election. Very slick and very bi-partisan(sarcasm). Who knows how this will play out. All indications are that Gregg will not run again in 2010 anyway,

Yes, this is interesting, isn't it? Major Garrett on FNC saying "Republicans are terrified" over this...

C'mon, Senator Gregg... do the right thing and say NO!

This is one of those things that would be loved if done be a GOP President but hated when Done by Obama.

Hope he refuses. Republicans still don’t have to vote for the stimulus bill though.
