Bush backlash seen at RNC meeting

WASHINGTON, Jan. 28 (UPI) -- Some Republican National Committee members in Washington for winter meetings say any vestige of former President George Bush must go, including the RNC chief.

With six candidates competing to run the Grand Old Party, some RNC members said they are determined to remove Mike Duncan, the current RNC chairman seeking re-election, because he is seen as a candidate who would maintain the status quo, The Washington Post (NYSE:WPO) reported Wednesday.

The winter meetings run through Saturday.

Duncan "has never criticized Bush when the president was wrong," said Shawn Steel, a member from California. "He's the agent of the establishment, and we need a change in personnel."

In an another move seen as distancing the RNC from Bush, members are expected to adopt a resolution criticizing "the bloated bank bailout bill" Bush championed and insisting the committee "take all steps necessary to oppose bailouts of industries, individuals or governments," the newspaper reported.

This is a good sign, IMO. I'm not in favor of throwing W. under the bus, but the RNC needs to make a clean and decisive break with compassionate conservativism once and for all.

My State Chair is one of those that wants to clean house and have NO RNC Members as the Chair. He is co-chair of the Ken Blackwell campaign.

Had a meeting with him last week on ACORN voter fraud right here in Oklahoma — since RNC looked the other way for years along with Pres Bush on ACORN voter fraud, time for new leadership. Ken Blackwell understands only too well what can happen with voter fraud in a State.

We almost lost an OK State Senate race because of ACORN so if it happened in OK, it must be terrible in other states.

The 168 members of the RNC elect the new chairman. Each state and territory has two national committeemen and a party chairman - each have one vote. You can find out who yours are by visiting your state GOP website.

I agree. We have to move forward. Bush is gone and hopefully they learned from his mistakes.
New people at the top may be bad for the status quo, but good for the future. The future is what we need to focus on.

Right on. The RINOs and Country Club Republicans are going to lose every future election. If we're seeking electoral success, we need to make a break with that crowd and stand on principles (chiefly: smaller government).

Bush pretended to be conservative but was really just one of the old-line eastern establishment. He may have grown up in Midland but his head was in Kennebunkport. McCain was far more similar to Bush than different. Even though he picked Arizona to be his base of operations he would have been at home in Connecticut. That political species has reached an evolutionary dead end. The GOP needs to move on if it expects to survive.

Thanks. Given what the GOP has become, I am NOT filled with a ‘hope’ for ‘change’. Most of the ‘conservatives’ have been shunned since the false image of ‘compassion’ got planted.

I'm of two minds - it seems like people expect the chair of the RNC to set policy, etc. IMHO, the primary role of the chair is to raise money and build an organization in order to support our candidates. Most people don't really pay attention during off-election years. Then, when they tune back in, they listen to the candidates, not the party apparatus.
