New York City fears return to 1970s

While many U.S. cities worry that their economies are deteriorating to the level of the 1930s Great Depression, New York City fears reliving a more recent decade that features strongly in city lore.

The 1970s were a low point in city history as a fiscal crisis almost pushed it into bankruptcy, crime rates soared, and homeless people crowded sidewalks as public services crumbled.

Almost a million people fled New York's Mean Streets during the decade for the safer, more stable suburbs, a population decline that took more than 20 years to reverse.

When discussing the current crisis, Mayor Michael Bloomberg, now seeking a third term, promises that he will not allow the city to return to the darkness of those days, although he stresses that it faces "giant financial problems."

"I know some are concerned that city services will erode," he recently told reporters. "Let me remind you that the city went down that road in the 1970s ... I can just tell you that we are not going to make that mistake again."

Heh, I’ve never seen “Cruising.” Yet I’ve seen his “Bobby Deerfield” from that same period (’77) several times. I don’t know why I find it such a guilty pleasure. It’s an odd duck “miss” of a film from his usually productive and top-notch period.

Back in the day, the best pizza was at the Hempstead bus terminal.

Near the draft board on Jackson St.

“most of the good German delis have been bought by Koreans.”

Yep, I was delivering Boar’s Head in the 70s during college breaks, and saw the turnover firsthand from Italian and German to Korean. And they usually bought the store with cash!

It was 1970’s NYC that convinced me to NEVER live in a city again. Ever. I’d move to Antarctica first.

John Stamos. That's one guy who definitely outlived his bad haircut. He was a dweeb back then, but now he's quite hot!

We aren’t there yet. Then again, Clemenza and I don’t actually remember much from the 1970s.

We just got a Grimaldi’s branch in Dallas. What do you think of the original, and do you have any faith in an offshoot?

No Italians left in Brooklyn? Are you loco?

Visit Bensonhurst, Cobble Hill, Carrol Gardens etc.

There are still the local Pizzerias, bakeries, salumeria, ravioli stores, cheese stores etc. I shop there all the time. They are owned and operated by real Italians, their brothers and their cousins and nephews from the other side.

The Westies were a strong-arm and murder for hire bunch of Irish thugs from Hell's Kitchen. They were never very organized or large in number. They were cruel and cold-blooded.

The whole OC scene in NYC changed over the past few decades and the families who hired the westies for piece work are much more 'legit'. Add to this the fact that Hell's Kitchen has been 'gentrified' and you have another lost piece of the old days puzzle.

Yes! (Although I was too young to worry about the draft.) IIRC, the pizza was about an inch thick and sold in squares, not slices.

What does New York have to offer

There comes a time in many people's lives when they decide it is better to admire the emperor's new clothes than to comment on them. So they sell out and join the parade and bask in the reflected glory of his gossamer finery.

Rubes and bumpkins from the countryside far and wide gather to gawk, and pretend they love the new threads as well, and along with the smirkfaced burghers, feel special about themselves for sharing in the process.

Yes, the Asian gangs are still around, and growing. There is even a small Korean OC element centered on West 32nd (very small). They are mostly involved in running brothels in the city and the suburbs behind ‘Oriental Massage’ storefronts.
