The first captain called the room to attention. After introducing the superintendent, he announced, Ladies and gentlemen, the 43rd president of the United States! The auditorium filled with a deafening applause, much louder than the rather tepid response to the speech he had just concluded.
The president quickly motioned for us to sit down. His demeanor was far different than the one Id seen on camera hundreds of times before this man clearly was not comfortable being a politician. Far from the stiff that hed always been when reporters were around, he seemed relaxed, excited, almost like a kid on Christmas.
The next two hours were inspiring, amazing, and ultimately very revealing about who the commander-in-chief really was and what he really believed....

It's not really hard to imagine. Envision a high ranking soldier, a General or Commander-in-Chief, for that matter having to foray into the midst of the enemy in a suit and tie, armed with nothing but his sense of right. Imagine now, that the enemy are the daily throngs of MSM sychophants, wierdos, victim group representers, and a host of other dysfunctional societal ailments.
This is what this man had to withstand daily for 8 years, nonstop. It is no wonder that he felt comfortable with these soldiers, these fellow-Americans (the real ones you betcha).

(No, pundits strongly believe that the proper solution is more dilution.)

I still have the picture from last years’ West Point graduation - “chest bump”. What a guy!
To: AJKauf
I miss the man already. Everyone who meets him says the same thing. He’s not the same guy we see on tv.

“Now its no secret that George W. Bush was unpopular; its also no secret that he was probably more popular within the ranks of the militarys officer corps than in any other sub-group of American citizens”
I found most officers and officer candidates in the USMC were pro Bush.....not that I met every one of them but I had a good source of information....my Marine sons.....

He was like this in his first speech post-Presidency in Midland.

Wonderfully written. Thanks to a West Point hero who took the time to express his opinion on our beloved CinC

You must mean the, almost completed, border fence, the stepped-up ICE raids and the huge jump in illegal immigrant arrests, convictions and deportations. Or are you one of those diehard malcontents who insist he’s weak in immigration?

That should be true. One of my college mates cousin got invited to the WH 2 years ago as part of an educational trip, and W. was said to be be one of the best down-to-earth conversationalist he’s ever met. He was actually surprised.
On camera, it’s a different story.
To: MeanWestTexan
Well, now he gets to sit back and watch a truly incompetent charismatic boob f’up for 4 years, probably 8. What will distress him most is the MSM making excuses, putting words and meanings that weren’t there into Bambi’s mouth, and the daily praise he’s going to get. Though, in the end, you can’t cover up incompetence, you can only suppress dissent through domination - which is what this Presidente’ is all about.

My favorite memory is Pres Bush on top of the rubble with his arm around the firefighter after 9/11. We needed someone to take the helm and lead and he did! B.Hussein would’ve been circling NY in the safety of AF1. looking down on his subjects. Pussy.

President Bush is comfortable around military types because, despite the left wing morons attempt to obfuscate the truth, he was one of "us". Now we can't all be grunts and being a former grunt I lay no claim on how fighter jocks see the world but I do know that in general veterans are a unique American club bound by certain things that never seem to fade.
I think it's as simple as that.

Yes, I hate how this fine man is villified.
To: Deb
Look, I agree with you on this and probably a host of other things. Immigration, probably spending, et al.....the point is that there was a down-to-earth good side to him (still is), just misplaced in a few areas. One example is trusting his fellow cross-aisle politicians.

What will President Bushs real legacy be? Just ask the members of the United States military. Thanks for posting this extremely heartwarming piece, Gaffer.
Pinging a few of my FR friends to a truly uplifting article written by a West Point cadet, a member of the class of 2009. The last paragraph, which I quoted above, brought tears to my eyes.
