The First Lady Tells a Story With Fashion
New York Times ^ | Jan 20, 2009 | CATHY HORYN

No one gets the fascination with Michelle Obama, fashion plate, more than her husband.

Invoking another president with a glamorous wife—that would be, maybe, John F. Kennedy? — President Obama told military guests at the Commander in Chief Ball last night, “I have the special honor of being the guy who accompanied Michelle Obama to the ball.”

That got a big laugh, but it would be a few minutes before the first lady made her entrance, in an ivory chiffon dress. But when she did, oh, what a roar.

It was an amazing day for Mrs. Obama — chic and bone-chilling, and maybe at times her feet hurt. For Tuesday night’s round of balls, she chose a fluffy, many-layered gown by a 26-year-old designer named Jason Wu. The dress had a one-shoulder strap and was flecked with organza flowers and crystals.

If Mrs. Obama is a different and more stylish first lady than the country has seen in a while, she proved it Tuesday with some striking fashion choices. The Wu gown was perhaps not as sophisticated as the coat-and-dress ensemble she wore for the swearing-in, but it still made a statement.

As for her vivid yellow inaugural outfit, it seemed designed to stand out against the traditional red and somber black coats on the Capitol steps.

Here is a bolder woman, a serious woman from Chicago and Harvard who is not afraid to express herself with fashion, and it is the kind of confidence that many women will recognize in themselves. Her clothes tell us that she has an adventurous spirit, as well as a sense of humor, and if some of these garments have almost an old-fashioned womanly quality, then they tell us that she is indeed not your average fashionista.

Awful. I have seen better ensembles on Camilla Parker Bowels..you know the wife of Prince Charles.

Michellemabelle is the worst dressed woman in the political world since...bella abzug. (Heh, pulled that one out of my hat).

The white dress was bad. It emphasized the width of her waist and her wide shoulders, which are not her best points. It looked like a prom dress, even though it may have made her feel like a fairy princess (you could tell from the look on her face). She needs smooth, straight, sophisticated lines in a dress.

She can be an attractive woman. No matter what her detractors say, she is tall and not heavy for her height—she’s in better shape than our beloved Laura, no doubt about it. But her taste in fashion is very questionable and it seem she has poor advisors.

She also needs to do her makeup better. She should never, ever go without strong lipstick and lashings of Botox. Without lipstick her mouth vanishes and without Botox she looks angry all the time. She should have her brows professionally shaped.

I strongly disagree with those who think she’s homely or has a big rear. Take a look at Mamie Eisenhower sometime. Not all First Ladies have been gorgeous. Let’s be objective and not sink to displaying Obama Derangement Syndrome.

I simply did not understand the GREEN gloves with the yellow dress. Was this some kind of environmental statement?

I didn't see the dress on tv. My husband (who was watching at work) described it as gold. A news article commented that in certain lights the dress appeared more green-ish. The pictures I have seen online make it look more green than yellow.

So, apparently the gloves were an attempt at a matchy color scheme.

I just saw where they called Michelle a fashion bail out.

My goodness, she will never be graceful. She is to smug, angry and arrogant

Another guy here.

Michelle has horrible fashion sense.
Believe me ladies, you could be dressed in a gunny sack and still look hot to us, but Michelle somehow manages to make even guys got “WTF” when she sports an outfit.

I noticed that, too. The article said the gloves were from J.Crew, along with the girls' coats.

My first thpought was...

Who ever dressed her should be shot...

To put them out of their misery...

She should have worn a dark color...

navy blue or something

At least Mrs Biden was in Red (Nancy reagon wannabe ???)

But the high boots and the short skirt was a no no...

Made in China...

The girls looked great and this was an incredible day for them. May the Lord bless them.

The yellow suit kinda looked like Big Bird and the gown did look like a chenille bedspread. The black and red acceptance dress was quite reminiscent of the colors of a black widow spider. Fashion statements indeed. Hope they didn’t spend much money on them.
