The First Lady Tells a Story With Fashion
New York Times ^ | Jan 20, 2009 | CATHY HORYN

No one gets the fascination with Michelle Obama, fashion plate, more than her husband.

Invoking another president with a glamorous wife—that would be, maybe, John F. Kennedy? — President Obama told military guests at the Commander in Chief Ball last night, “I have the special honor of being the guy who accompanied Michelle Obama to the ball.”

That got a big laugh, but it would be a few minutes before the first lady made her entrance, in an ivory chiffon dress. But when she did, oh, what a roar.

It was an amazing day for Mrs. Obama — chic and bone-chilling, and maybe at times her feet hurt. For Tuesday night’s round of balls, she chose a fluffy, many-layered gown by a 26-year-old designer named Jason Wu. The dress had a one-shoulder strap and was flecked with organza flowers and crystals.

If Mrs. Obama is a different and more stylish first lady than the country has seen in a while, she proved it Tuesday with some striking fashion choices. The Wu gown was perhaps not as sophisticated as the coat-and-dress ensemble she wore for the swearing-in, but it still made a statement.

As for her vivid yellow inaugural outfit, it seemed designed to stand out against the traditional red and somber black coats on the Capitol steps.

Here is a bolder woman, a serious woman from Chicago and Harvard who is not afraid to express herself with fashion, and it is the kind of confidence that many women will recognize in themselves. Her clothes tell us that she has an adventurous spirit, as well as a sense of humor, and if some of these garments have almost an old-fashioned womanly quality, then they tell us that she is indeed not your average fashionista.

I truly doubt that the space time continuum can be warped enough to make that woman look attractive. A mere dress construct is surely not up to that monumental task. It has, certainly, if anything else, accentuated the gravitational well that are her hips which must be attracting other planetary bodies into its orbit.

I ain’t no lady, but no way will shelly ever be near Jackie.

And Laura has set the standard for class, grace, style and beauty for the next generation.

shelly will at best be an average 1st lady — not as power driven as hitlery, never as classy as Nancy nor Laura.

Ok, I will begin. That yellow dress looked the color of baby poop and it did not fit her well.

The white dress was not striking. As she turned dancing I got the feeling it was a dress made from toilet paper.

Nothing against wearing clothes; but she really needs to get with a designer that understands her figure and how she moves which is the same as Caroline Kennedy, like a man.

If you drop enough acid she might look halfway presentable...

Several of us have already compared that thing to a chenille bedspread. That’s the most positive statement we could think of.

I wonder who paid for these cloths? If this had been Sarah, there would only be criticism.

We wend to Walmart during the swearing in and they were playing it over the loud speakers and I was surprised since Walmart is an enemy of the liberal environmental wackos.

And this is just the beginning

I saw that yellow outfit she wore during the inauguration, and it made her butt look four feet wide. Bad choice for someone with her body build She looks bigger than Mr. HopeyChangey himself. I haven’t seen the fluffy white organza dress with flower appliques, but it sounds like something I wore to a recital when I was 10.

I simply did not understand the GREEN gloves with the yellow dress. Was this some kind of environmental statement?

She has a face like a caricature, and a hateful personality. I think these guys must have been hitting the bottle early to write this stuff.

Some one posted someplace else, “the first ho.” GARISH choice of the yellow outfit and green gloves and shoes! Why not choose a complementary color such as purple? That would make a fashion statement. Well, she did clean up pretty well (for her) for today’s events, but, she is no Laura Bush!

Regarding that yellowish/gold job of this morning, it looked halfway okay if it had not been for the greenish, puke-ish looking gloves. Someone did have a problem with the diamond choker, but then again someone else thought that was part of the outfit. Who the he[[ knows. At least we did not have a cameltoe to contend with.

Didnt see the white dress..

The yellow ??? dress and coat looked like it came from Family Dollar...

I hope she didnt pay more than $1.99 for it...

Plus tax of course...

And she should not have stood next to First Lady Laura Bush in that...

She made 2X of Laura...
