BY WILLIAM BRANIGIN
Barack Obama took the oath of office today as the 44th president of the United States and pledged to "begin again the work of remaking America."
Addressing a huge throng estimated at more than 2 million people on the capital's Mall and millions of others watching on television, Obama recognized the multiple crises now afflicting the nation at a time of war abroad and economic turmoil at home. But he sought to rally Americans to a "new era of responsibility" and the promise of a brighter future.
He cited a profound "sapping of confidence across our land -- a nagging fear that America's decline is inevitable, and that the next generation must lower its sights." The challenges are real, serious and many, and "they will not be met easily or in a short span of time," he said.
"But know this, America -- they will be met. On this day, we gather because we have chosen hope over fear, unity of purpose over conflict and discord. On this day, we come to proclaim an end to the petty grievances and false promises, the recriminations and worn out dogmas, that for far too long have strangled our politics."
Obama continued: "Starting today, we must pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off, and begin again the work of remaking America."

So, NOW do we have standing to see his eligibility documents like a birth certificate???
I haven’t watched the news and won’t for a few more days.
To see all this arse licking makes me cringe.
You would think that one just one journalist would be curious as to why the phony is fighting not to show his real birth certificate.
I mean isn’t there just one left.
It’s the same as the what is a civilian sercurity force?
I wish him good luck. He’s going to need it.
It was so bad my flesh hasn't stopped crawling. I would expect better from a high school freshmen.
let the “re-making of America begin......
the slide to the ghett-Oisation begins.
We are in a world of sh-t!
Makes you long for the poetic genius of Maya Angelou, doesn’t it?
Welcome to the beginning of the United Socialist States of America (USSA). GOD HELP US ALL!!!!!
I noticed something during the inauguration that freaked me out. It was the way the crowds were reacting. They were like in a trance.
The chanting of “OBAMA! OBAMA!” and the way that they were cheering and waving the flags was reminiscent of how the people reacted towards Stalin in Moscow’s Red Square or Mao in Beijing’s Tiananmen Square.
This is scary, folks! I hope and pray we only have to endure 4 years of this nightmare!
no, paying taxes is.
“Is dissent still the highest form of patriotism?”
Never more than it is now.
The sad thing is, the babbling woman made as much sense as Obama - proof positive he wrote his own speech. Even the crowd seemed let down and waiting for any opportunity to break into applause. His first disappointment has to be that lousy, lackluster speech.
Sorry dissent is only allowed if there is a Republican White Male President. Now you can be jailed for it and called a racist.
Now now, he said we shouldn’t measure government by its size, but whether it is working or not. So, I guess in our case, when it is not working, we should grow it even bigger? Spectacular.
Is dissent still the highest form of patriotism? It never was.
You didn't forget to set your watch again, did you?
OMG. Your RIGHT....sheesh.
I don’t He will this time. The people of the nation voted for a government devoit of God, well, they got it. Now watch as the USA falls apart.
Welcome to Europe.
It was a good speech, but I’ll have to go over the text.
Interesting how he told the rest of the world that we weren’t going to apologize for our lifestyle (contrary to earlier election remarks) and told those who would commit a terrorist act to stop blaming the West for all their problems.
As for the “responsibility” section of his speech, time will tell...that can have many definitions. Remember Michelle did tell crowds that “Barack WILL MAKE YOU WORK!!”
