Mahmut Aygun, was suffering from cancer and died in Berlin at the age of 87. Known as the "kebab king" he was born in Turkey and moved to Germany at the age of 16 to open a snack stall. He invented the doner kebab nearly 40 years ago. Kebab meat, consisiting of roast lamb and spices, had traditionally been served with rice but in a moment of inspiration Mr Aygun saw that the future lay in putting the meat inside a pitta bread. That allowed customers who had been drinking to wander off into the night with their food and eat it as they stumbled home. Mr Aygun once said: "I thought how much easier it would be if they could take their food with them." The first of the new snacks was served on March 2, 1971, at Hasir, his restaurant in Berlin. It was called a doner kebab after the Turkish word "dondurmek" which means a rotating roast. Mr Aygun went on to invent the yoghurt sauce often served with a doner kebab. The subsequent popularisiation of the doner kebab in the UK led to many traditional fish and chip shops going bust. In Berlin his death was greeted with sadness and one headline read: "Thanks, Mahmut!"

First class ‘live’ beer and great fish n’ chips are still available all over the UK. Come over again and enjoy!!!
Our government say it’s killing us and would like to ban it all, but by and large we live to a ripe old age!
Brit culture! Is it good? Ask Top Gear!
Ahhhhhh. I miss our ‘local’. It’s called ‘Nellies’ in the middle of Beverley. Live, coal fires and gas lighting. People come in with their dogs after a good walk. Everything, pretty much, is original. Well kept Sam Smith’s....and a great, home-cooked Sunday roast.
Got to visit last March. Enjoyed those pints and games of snooker with the kids and hubby. :)
Not Guilty! Its the Scots that deep fry everything.
Deep fried snickers bars....I kid you not.
A fat filled diet might make life too short too :)

Eeeeeeew! Gross me back to the Stonehenge!
(and the blood of the Scots runs thick thru my veins, too!)
I was stationed for 4 years at Tempelhof in Berlin. I well remember going up to the Platz de Luftbrucke to buy a doner kebab from a snack stand. Loved them, you enjoyed them while eating and were still enjoying them 2 hours later!
"IT'S CRAP!"
Seriously though, it's worth looking for the real deal once you've tried them in Germany. Now if we could add those wurst stands - mmmmm.

If I ever get to Germany, I will try them on the strength of your recommendation.
In New Zealand they are almost always owned and operated by Turks: either immigrants or students coming thru on a working holiday. Interestingly, many of them seem to be Christian Turks rather than Muslim.

I would give my left nut for a decent American hot dog right now. The sort you can get in Chicago (no ketchup! but definitely everything else!) There is NO SUCH THING as a hot dog as you know it here in NZ. I can get close, but not quite...
Scotland is the heart attack capital of the world.
With deep-fried Snickers Bars on the menu, I’m not a bit surprised. My arteries wanted to clog up just reading about that! I imagine eating one or two of those would enough to prove lethal for anyone.
