Obama honors rival McCain on eve of inauguration

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President-elect Barack Obama honored his vanquished Republican rival John McCain on Monday, describing the Arizona senator as an "American hero" while the Democrat prepared to assume the office that both men fought bitterly to attain.

Obama and McCain clashed repeatedly on the campaign trail over foreign and domestic policy in sometimes heated exchanges that occasionally veered into the personal.

But Obama made clear that period had passed even as he predicted the two would not always get along in the future.

"John is not known to bite his tongue and if I'm screwing up, he's going to let me know. And that's how it should be," Obama said, adding -- to applause -- that the presidency was just one branch of the U.S. government.

Obama will be sworn in as the nation's 44th president on Tuesday.

He spent the evening before his inauguration at dinners honoring McCain, former Secretary of State Colin Powell -- who broke with the Republican Party to endorse Obama -- and Vice President-elect Joe Biden.

I supported McCain when he became the candidate against barry....period....didn't like him....never liked him really.....but I supported who I had too....

big question is....why did he win the primaries?...oh, thats right ...we so called conservatives and Republicans decided to eat our own and forced by our indifferance Thompson and Rudy out...as well as Mitt....all of who could have given a better preformance than McInsane.....

instead of coming together, we were at each others throats....

and then enough decided they didn't want to vote this year and others decided to give third party candidates their vote, thus ensuring the Rats take many Senate seats and the presidency.....

You know full well that I voted third-party for POTUS, and I do not regret that vote one bit. McCain screwed the pooch with his bailout (i.e., Socialist pork festival) escapade.

I also voted third-party for Senator in Virginia. But don't worry: it wouldn't have mattered regardless. Gilmore ran a pathetic campaign that was DOA.

Reagan was a Republican.....not totally conservative but a tremendous leader...

there isn't one Rat that has done the country well since maybe Kennedy...

not Carter..not Johnson...not Clinton...and now, not the barrista....

keep voting third party and we'll get more barristas and less Reagans....

Clearly, this Reuters writer, like most Obama supporters, is high.

The only person I remember 'bitterly' fighting for the Presidency was Obama-- with Acorn, his thugs blocking polling places...

I remember McCain spending much of his time defending Obama, actually.

Here we just have to give Obama credit. He’s knows a backstabbing, turncoat, double-crossing attention craving little egomaniac when he sees one.

personally I don't follow what other freepers vote for......but in general, third party votes are a vote for the Rat.....so congratulations....you should have fun at the crowning tomorrow in DC....you fit right it with that group....

third party candidates may be okay for very local offices where you have a chance...but state and federal officies....its impossible...

“McCain, a stalking horse for the one????”

-You know, if you believe all the theories about the Powers That Be (PTB), you’d half to say it’s a distinct possibility. Imagine all of us stupid clods, believing we are in a democracy when all of this is being deciced over brandy and cigars at the Green Briar or something.

What a sick world if that’s the case? Makes you pray that God will one day get mighty pissed and teach these people a lesson.

McCain has finished using her for his own ends and has thrown her away like a used condom

I must be blind, but I actually thought that the old asshat had made a brilliant move with pickin Gov Palin...

in hindsight I clearly see that he indeed, as usual, screwed the pooch and backstabbed us all because he truly thought that she would be the death of his campaign instead of a lightning rod...

now we have a bought and paid for, filibuster proofed, communist majority in both houses being 'led' by an AFRICAN-american 'Constitutional' lawyer that hasnt even met the most basic requirement of city council, much less President... rule of law is dead, contract has been broken, check the tag if you wonder which side Im lined up with...

McCain/Obama -- two sides of the same coin. Both represent themselves and not us, yet we just keep electing these weasels.

We've yet to figure out that it's a political club and none of us are members -- we're just the ripped-off, unpaid, "hired help" for their schemes!
