Jaques, a UC Davis graduate, said the pelicans got caught in a storm that arrived Dec. 14. It was the worst coastal freeze in 40 years, she said, dropping temperatures to as low as 2 degrees and covering beaches in snow. Within days, she said, the birds flew south. ...It's possible the frigid birds spent every last calorie..."

Poor birds must have believed ALGORE!
“Al Gore Lied, Pelicans Died”
I read earlier reports this week, that it was most likely a disease. One that was swept up in the warmer ocean currents made possible by the bad bad bad, AGW.
Sorry Brown Bags....for all my pollution.
It’s Bush’s fault. We now need a massive government program to warm the pelicans.
Paging Albert Gore on line 1.
If they’d been white pelicans we all know what he would have done.
I thought that was a bit far-fetched at the time, but maybe we're there!
What global warming? U.S., Europe feel big chill
Remember when "global warming" was supposed to be most easily recognized by milder winters?
Is global warming caused by human activity?
The last link is a must read.
This story alludes to freezing temps on the Oregon coast in Dec for the sick Pelicans. What were the temps in your ocean front digs?
One day with windchill it was 6 degrees.
Plenty of high teens/low 20s.
Had to lock down the doggie door for a month.
3 Labs with Cabin fever was not fun.
The yard birds were flying so slow making it unfair. The boyz and some unknown cats showed up to take advantage of this fact.
The day the snow melted away it was awesome to see whole flocks of a variety of birds come to the area and start worm/bug pecking the ground. Even though I put great bird food out only a few birds came out to eat.
So the story really does make common sense.
Perhaps this is why some areas are seeing such late in the year geese migrating.
Now I am curious if the Artic winter is going to effect ocean temp and the lil creature that the whales feed on.
Will see when the season comes here in a month and they start there migration south.
If the food is abundant like it was overly so a few years ago the whales tend to stick around and gorge before heading south.
