Senator Ted Kennedy made an important political endorsement Tuesday. Massachusetts' Senior Senator endorsed the Portugese water dog as the perfect pet for the nation's new first family.
President-elect Barack Obama made a very public promise to daughters Sasha and Malia the night he was elected. "You have earned the puppy that is coming with us to the White House," he said during his speech.
Ever since, speculation has abounded on what type of dog the first family would choose. The Obama's have said they need a dog that is hypoallergenic, because daughter Malia has allergies.
"A Portuguese water dog is the perfect choice for first dog," Kennedy said in a written statement. "The Obama girls -- and their parents -- will love a Portuguese water dog. They're loyal, smart, loving and they became a real part of the family. And they definitely do not shed."
Senator Kennedy and wife Vicki have three Portugese water dogs of their own. Sunny and Splash often accompany Kennedy to the Senate. "They love being around people and being part of the action," he said.
The Kennedy's just added a third Portuguese water dog to the family, a puppy named Captains Courageous or Cappy for short.
"I am proud to endorse the Portuguese water dog as the next First Dog of the United States," Senator Kennedy said. "They have a can do and hopeful spirit. They are smart. They are resilient. They are determined. They are optimistic. And they are tireless. Sounds like a perfect fit for the Obama Family and the Obama Administration."

"Water eragghhh dog... heh heh.... hic er aaugghh"
I love listening to the very Reverend Manning on his youtube videos when he declares Obama to be nothing more than a “long legged mac-daddy”.
That long legged mac daddy has bigger ears than my Lucy. I think they should have a rescue dog that came from the poorest part of DC.
A Saint Bernard might be better. You can fit a lot of brandy in those little canisters they wear.
“oh boy. The Swimmer recommends an water dog!”
Yes, sad, ironic, and humorous at same time! What celebrity Barry has that the entire nation is caught up in his dog choice...
However, in throwing in my 2 cents, it is interesting that Barry has settled in on 2 rare breeds that cost a lot of money that he is claiming he in fact will get from a dog shelter? Likelihood of finding rare breed at shelter is minimal.
...This is ironicaly analogous to his campaign promises and current spending plan—expensive to implement and not likely to obtain the desired outcome.
Not that I actually care what sort of dog Obama gets, but it is instructive that Obama is flat-out lying to the face of the American people on the dog issue. The media, of course knows that he is, and they are facilitating it. Dogs end up as "rescue dogs" because nobody wants them. For that reason, Obama has stressed that he will be getting a rescue dog. Because it is the bleeding-heart civic-minded thing to do. But he also plans on getting a puppy, because that's what he promised his girls. Unfortunately, portuguese water dog puppies can cost as much as $2500 a piece from breeders. So no person in his right mind is going to take one to a pound to give a way. Obama has to know this, so, as usual, he is trying to have it both ways, and the press is facilitating him.
The Soeteros should not get a dog until they are completely settled and in a daily routine.
Which will consist of mac daddy going to the gym ,
smoking ,shooting hoops and lounging,
Big Momma yelling at him to do the dishes and make his bed ( 60 Minutes Interview, Nov 16, 2008 )
and Momma in Law fussin at everyone .
A dog will be just a prop to be pawned off
on the help when the photographers are gone.
And can probably drive better too
Well, who would know more about water dogs than Teddy Chappaquiddick???
After all, he IS one!!
Oh my gosh, I just found the perfect dog for the Obamas. I read Portugesse Water Dog, and went to petfinder thinking they could adopt one, like they said they wanted to. So what do I find, I find 10 Portugese Water Dogs (or mixes) and there’s this one in particular that has to be the perfect dog for the Obamas. Here’s the description (no joke...this is what it says.)
Meet Wema - curly haired cutie!
Wema means goodness, kindness and compassion in Swahili. Wema is young and healthy and homeless, like millions of dogs in our nation’s shelter system. And like so many Americans today, she is a victim of financial hardship. Her people couldn’t afford to keep her anymore. Now she waits with hope in her heart for a new family to love.
