call me stupid, but can’t they put some big airbags underneath to prevent sinking?

probably at least 33 degrees. You don't live very long in 33 degree water.

My understanding is it doesn’t take that large of an object to cause a major problem if it is ingested into an engine. I’m sure our Freeper pilot/aircraft expert community will have more analysis as information is reported.

The initial landing is, but if the thing sinks immediately or cartwheels everyone dies - plus the rescue workers often have problems getting to the site. This time they got lucky.

I hope everyone got out alive. I can’t even imagine the fear of those people on board knowing their plane was going down

“Airbus 380”...gaaaaah, reporters are so stupid. Try Airbus A320.
Did this thing just go off the end of the runway at Laguardia, or did it actually get into the air and the pilot did a controlled ditching? If he had to ditch the airplane after multiple bird strikes and possibly a double engine failure, that is a PHENOMENAL piece of airmanship.

All passenger jets (not just Airbus Industries) will float due to their structural ability to maintain a moderately pressurized atmosphere in the fuselage. As the baggage hold and wing air spaces fill with water, the plane will settle. It may not completely sink if the passenger space does not fill up, but with all the exits open, it’s just a matter of time.

If what I saw on CNN is correct, it got at least 300 ft. in the air.

The odds of surviving a takeoff gone bad is very low. I'd bet you have nearly 95 percent survival on this one. Could be wrong though.
